KEY Team Projects and Highlights

What is the KEY Energy Program?

Energy has quickly become one of the most important topics we now discuss across the state. Our Kentucky Energy for Youth (KEY) Program has been designed to better prepare students to understand the importance of this conversation and be able to share important insights about the economic, social, and ecological impacts of coal and alternative energy here in Kentucky. Tied to classroom instruction and state standards, this unique experience allows young scientists to learn up close about ways to address Kentucky’s energy future.

Students experience hands-on lessons regarding energy use and energy development. From modeling wind turbines to “mining for coal,” students gain a greater insight into the different challenges facing our energy future.

In addition to classroom lessons, KEY teams attend an over-night field trip to Eastern Kentucky's coal country. There they tour Portal 31 (a retired coal mine), the Coal Mining Museum, and learn about the natural beauty and habitat of the area at Kingdom Come State Park.

Because there is limited space on the trip to Eastern Kentucky, students lead presentations for their classmates about what they've learned. From coal formation and usage to the carbon cycle, and mining impacts, students take what they’ve learned over the year and educate others. We'd like to take a moment to highlight some of these amazing students on this site. Enjoy your lesson!
