Fibers from the medial reticular formation of the medulla (especially the nucleus reticularis gigantocellularis) travel bilaterally in the anterior part of the lateral funiculus and go to the entire the length of the cord to lamina VII. Fibers are not somatotopic.
Lateral tegmental system conveys impulses from the reticular formation to the spinal cord for sympathetic control.
This system has substantial cortical input to influence voluntary movement, muscle tone, respiration, pressor/depressor function, and regulation of sensory impulses.
Nucleus raphe magnus sends fibers bilaterally in the dorsolateral funiculus to laminas I, II, and V in the cervical enlargement.
