Calf outside the cow pen.
Calf inside the cow pen.
Mother to the two calves munching away.
When I came onto the ground here in Bungoma, my mum had 7 cows. The sad news is that, ‘between’ the 7 cows, they were producing a paltry 15 liters of milk! I managed to convince her to sell all, but two of the animals, just over a year ago. She agreed and that left us with one cow (an Ayrshire) and her calf. The cow was giving between 3 and 5 liters of milk a day. It was feeding on grass and Napier grass. I changed the feeding regime and it now feeds on Napier, normal grass and Yellow Maize Silage (grown and produced/chopped on our farm). We also give it licking salts and dairy meal. The same caw now gives on average 10 liters of milk! We want to build our silage stock and upgrade the cows to total zero grazing…
