Hospital/Homebound placement allows students with severe medical issues or illnesses to continue education outside of the school building. Homebound is the most restrictive placement available to students. Homebound instruction is much different than home schooling. It is not designed to take the place of the traditional school setting and it is the goal to return students to school as soon as medically possible.

To be eligible for Hospital/Homebound placement, the student must:

- Be enrolled in CMS and reside in Mecklenburg County
- Be anticipated to miss 4 weeks (or more) of school due to medical diagnosis(es)
- Have current documentation from a treating healthcare provider that documents the reason for school absence and the anticipated date of return to school

Homebound services are delivered by certified CMS staff outside of the school building – typically in the home, hospital, or other similar location. Homebound service time is determined on a case-by-case basis. The Section 504 or IEP team makes this determination based on individual student needs. The duration of homebound services also varies depending on student need. The Section 504 or IEP Team considers the treating healthcare provider’s recommendation when determining the duration of homebound instruction.

During Homebound services, assignments and instructional materials are provided by the student’s home school, or the assigned teachers in a virtual platform such as Edgenuity or NCVPS. Assigned homebound staff will provide instruction, support students as they complete assignments, and coordinate work and materials with the home school of record. In addition, as applicable, Specially Designed Instruction and/or related services for homebound students may occur within the hospital or home setting. The goal is for homebound students to be as on-par as possible with their coursework when they transition back to the school setting. This means students will spend time completing assignments outside of their sessions with homebound staff.
