This maker residency sponsored by the Vermont Council for the Arts was a partnership between Hyde Park Elementary School and Lucie deLaBruere / Create Make Learn. Many thanks to the Middle School teachers and students of Hyde Park Elementary for their creative spirit and willingness to explore learning through creating and making.
Hyde Park Elementary School has recently created a school makerspace equipped with maker tools such as 3D printers, vinyl cutters, and a laser cutter. This residency will make use of these tools to create personalized physical products that help students consider and express their identity. Not only will students gain self-awareness, they will also experience the creative process, and create confidence using various tools and materials found in the school makerspace.
This residency will encourage students to think about their own self-identity through various prompts and hands on activities that result in the creation of a physical product that includes design elements that expresses an evolving sense of self.
One of the goals of the residency is to help teachers and students develop relationships during a time where it is crucial to re-engage students with their school community. Not only will products students design and create reveal their personal interest and identity, but the process will allow students and their teachers to discover skills and strengths that are not often revealed through traditional academic learning.
Middle Grades students are participating in inquiry around the following themes in their core classes. The maker residency will provide with hands on learning related to this theme.
