Visva-Bharati, founded by Rabindranath Tagore in Santiniketan in 1921, is a unique institution that reflects the poet’s vision of a holistic, inclusive, and nature-integrated education. Rooted in the ideals of universal humanism, Visva-Bharati — meaning “where the world makes a home in a single nest” — was conceived as a centre for the confluence of Eastern and Western thought, art, and culture. Santiniketan, originally established as an experimental school in 1901, offered an alternative to rote learning by encouraging creativity, freedom, and close interaction with nature. Classes were conducted in the open air under trees, symbolizing the harmony between the learner and the natural world. Over time, it evolved into a university where education, art, science, music, philosophy, and internationalism merged to create a vibrant intellectual and cultural community. Visva-Bharati remains a living embodiment of Tagore’s belief that education should nurture the mind, spirit, and senses in equal measure, fostering a deep connection between the individual, society, and the universe. In September 2023, the core area of the university was recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site.
