The PPVT-5 is a norm-referenced test used to assess receptive vocabulary in children and adults ages 2;6 (years; months) and older. The test takes between 12 to 14 minutes depending on the age of the examinee.
Materials included:
Manual (provides information about administration and scoring of the test)
Stimulus Book (Book containing stimuli presented to examinee)
Record Form (Where examiner documents and scores examinee responses)
Administration of the test:
This test is to be administered by a trained SLP. The child or adult will be presented a page in the stimulus booklet, which will contain 4 different pictures. The SLP will read off a word and the individual must gesture to the picture they think correctly matches the word. The SLP will record in the record form whether or not the child chose the correct picture for that item. The test ends when the child gets 6 items wrong in a row. As the test goes on, the words and images increase in difficulty.
Strengths:
Quick and easy administration of the test
Does not require the examinee to produce spoken speech, read, or write anything!
Broad age range: you can use this assessment with individuals from ages 2-90
Weaknesses:
The test doesn't take deaf or hard of hearing individuals into consideration
Valid in measuring receptive vocabulary but not overall cognitive or language ability in general
