About Us

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Association of Educators (CMAE) is committed to advancing the cause of public education.

CMAE is the county’s largest professional employee organization and our members work at every level of the education system from pre-school to university graduate programs.

CMAE is an affiliate organization of the National Education Association (NEA).

NEA’s members work in every state and in more than 14,000 communities across the United States.


The Objectives of the Association

The Objectives of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Association of Educators is to:

(a) to promote within the Association the highest professional practices in Public Education and to encourage active participation of the members in the implementation of fair and just solutions to problems impacting our profession.

(b) To advocate for all students to be provided with a high quality educational experience which enables them to become productive citizens.

(c) To provide a local professional community to serve as an action body which creates opportunities for members to utilize their skill-sets, abilities and talents for the advancement of public education locally, state-wide, and nationally.

(d) To provide opportunities for member engagement and leadership in the Public Education profession.


(e) To promote and protect the dignity and welfare of its students, members, and Public Education employees.

(f) To encourage members to become active in the community by exercising their rights and privileges as citizens, lending their voice in advocacy, and providing leadership in their community, state, and nation to uplift the profession and the students they serve.


(g) to advance the cause of education in the Charlotte Mecklenburg Association of Educators.

Our History

NCAE began in 1970 by a group of educators committed to integrating our NC public schools. That commitment to equality, advocacy, and access to education for all continues today. See the video to the left to hear more about the history of NCAE
