At Beacon, we believe that every child should love the journey of learning. We are a low-demand environment with an emphasis on personalized education. Hands-on, peer-to-peer engagement and flexibility is essential for development and growth. Providing content that is interesting and appropriate allows for a confidence boosting environment.
Working as a team with parents allows for whole-child enrichment.
At Beacon, the goal is community. Through games, crafts (so many crafts!) and free play, children learn to collaborate, resolve challenges and build communication skills.
Multi-Age Classrooms
Multi-age classrooms are designed for students of different ages within the same year. They are also known as vertical, family and heterogeneous groupings. In these classrooms, children from various age groups of more than one year are deliberately mixed in the same class. This approach enhances continuity of learning and the forming of positive relationships with teachers and children, and between children.
Multigrade teachers use various classroom strategies to manage different levels in a multi-age classroom. These strategies include classroom management, collaborative learning, using differentiated instruction, connecting the teaching to real-life situations, integrating technology in teaching, and the flexibility of the teacher. Teachers can also focus on learning outcomes from a mid-range grade as a starting point to guide their formative assessment and plans for differentiation. Establishing learning centers and a variety of groupings supports a range of learners and ensures classroom management.
