In this section, we will introduce a humorous and touching documentary film, 《我的北京生日》("My Beijing Birthday"). We will use the Mandarin segments in the film to study the following:
how to explain how things have turned out differently or the same as expected
how to compare and contrast and draw analogies
learn the cultural etiquette of being humble
gain insights of the lives of young people in China
gain practice with natural, conversational Mandarin Chinese at the discourse-level
practice speaking, listening, reading and writing at the advanced level.
The film we are going to study is 《我的北京生日》 (English title: My Beijing Birthday). It is a 52-min documentary film, delivered in English with abundant Chinese footages. The film is written and directed by Howie Snyder who documented his experiences in China. Here is a posters for this film. Please think about the following:

The film is set in Beijing over the span of more than a decade. The characters interviewed on the film all speak Beijing dialect of Chinese. Inseparable from language use is the ways that Chinese people interact with each other, what to say, how to respond, how to hold a conversation, how to ask questions, how to use body language, etc, etc. Such ways of interacting are also influenced by very subtle cultural norms of what is polite and appropriate. In this episode, we will tease apart the language at the beginning of the film where Teacher Ma "scolded" Howie for being late. We will focus on the tacit cultural notion of appropriate behavior.
Step #1: Watch the 迟到了"late for class" scene that starts around 2:08 min into the film. See how much you understand the dialogue. Howie seems rather polite, apologizing (对不起,迟到了)and acknowledging this being a cause for punishment (该罚). But why is Teacher Ma still discontent--what about Howie's demeanor that is a bit "off" from a Beijinger's perspective?
Step #2: Watch the following explanation that narrates over the scene.
Step #3: Study this dialogue and be ready to perform a role-play in class. To aid your study of the language, below is the script with Pinyin, word-glossary and translation added. (Volunteer groups will be elicited; Also feel free to perform a role-play based on other parts of the film and explain what you think is the cultural way of interacting in your role-play).
The central theme of this film is change in life and how we reflect on the changes we experienced. If you were to describe changes that happened to you or around you, how do you say them in Chinese? How do you chat with your Chinese friends whom you have not seen for a long time? How do you talk about how you or them as having changed, and how do you ask questions, give responses and follow where the conversation is? How do you write about changes in one's life? In this section, we will use a number of sample interactions from the film to tease out the language tools (conjunction words, adverbs, sentence patterns) that help to compare and contrast and talk about changes in Chinese.

Practice: A Writing Assignment
Writing Prompt (写作文)
Write an essay in which you relate the film to your personal experience and your immediate environment. In your essay, include these two main components:
1) what kind of changes were portrayed in the film. What part of the film did you feel strongly about?
2) relate the film to your personal life: what changes have taken place in your life? How do you see yourself as different from before and what kind of a person do you wish to be?
3) reflect on changes in your own immediate environment? How are things different from what they used to be? Are these changes good? Are these changes bad?
4) In your conclusion, reflect on a central theme of your essay.
The genre of your essay is a film reaction piece, moving from narration to exposition. Include a summary of the film, and then expand along the line of the three components mentioned above. Make sure you build a coherent theme in your essay.
