This is an example of a drumbeat made by a student in a Multi-Media Music Production class in a high school. Students were tasked to create a beat in GarageBand on their iPads. The students then will add this beat into their mashup project in Mixcraft, including other samples that they have changed the key and tempi or in Audacity. Requirements for the beat making were to use at least four instrument colors (Blue – cymbals, Yellow – snare-like instruments, Green – toms, Pink – bass, Purple – auxiliary percussion), record it for four measures, and adjust it to match the tempo of their larger project. The following example shows how the student follows directions properly, as well as showing musical intuition with the hemiola rhythms they created.
Student A’s composition shows instinctual writing of a musical period, even though the concept was not taught in class.
These are examples of student compositions. These high school students have been learning basic piano schools throughout this school year and have learned to read both treble and bass clef. They recently learned about key signatures and their relation to Students were given several options for keys in which to write their short pieces. They used the scale associated with that key to write their melodies and used the chord progression I – IV – I – V – I to harmonize them. Students were also given set rhythmic parameters and were instructed to write melodies that they would be able to play. They first wrote their melodies and chords with accidentals in them, then copied them onto another page using only key signatures.
Student B’s composition shows instinctual writing of Fa to Mi resolutions from mm. 2-3 and mm. 4-5. The V7 chord was briefly discussed in prior classes, which possibly influenced this student’s writing.
