With the continuous innovation within AI, not only is there an increased reliance on the complex cloud infrastructures, but it also changes the way we interact with the cloud. More and more cloud-based learning services are finding ways to integrate an AI component as a value add, such as chatbots that act as intelligent tutors (Gewirtz, 2023). This trend is expected to increase and sets a viable stage for venture opportunities in cloud learning.
An Example Venture in Intelligent Tutors: Synthesis AI
Synthesis Tutor is an AI-powered educational tool that is designed to provide personalized math tutoring for children aged 8-14 years old. This SaaS example is the latest development from Synthesis School that uses AI technology that originally derived from within the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in the United States Department of Defense and expanded upon by a Ph.D. Professor from Princeton University. The tutor aims to engage learners using several of the emerging markets seen in this course: game-based learning design, assistive technology and it also tracks and evaluates student progress (learning analytics). The tutor plans to implement a series of knowledge checks and assessments for evaluation when the full version is expected to be released in Fall 2023. There is also a product roadmap for multiple subjects set to be released within the next three years.
John Dahn, Co-Founder
Chrisman Frank, Co-Founder / Chief Executive Officer
Synthesis School is a private company of approximately 50 employees founded in 2020 by Josh Dahn and Chrisman Frank. In 3 rounds of funding, they have raised $17 million USD within the last two years. Prior to founding Synthesis, Dahn was hired by Elon Musk to build a school at SpaceX known as the Ad Astra School where he still currently serves as Executive Director, and Frank previously worked for competitor in the market, ClassDojo (Raines, 2023).
Activity #2 - Try a cloud-based intelligent tutor!Â
Watch the video to see how learners are interacting with it (scroll down on the page a little bit).
Try it yourself! Follow this link to the 10-20 minute demo version:
https://tutor.synthesis.is/demo/?
Consider the following as you go through the demo:
How this cloud-based intelligent tutor would be able to personalize the content for the learner and what data it would need to store to do so.
How this example could be delivered to learners and educators at scale.
If there were a new concept or idea that should be "learned" by the tutor, how simple or difficult it would be to update the content in this demo.
Activity # 3 - Padlet - Now that you have had a chance to demo Synthesis Tutor, we'd like to hear from you again.
