OER Initiatives at Ontario Colleges

CLO OER Working Group’s first webinar where we hear from a panel of CLO members from across Ontario who conduct OER work at their institutions:

  • projects large and small, new and established, extensive and small-scale, grassroots, and institutional.

  • the what, who, how of initiatives, how do they promote, get buy-in and support, what are their challenges

  • If they use the OER Toolkit on the Learning Portal, and if so how?

Centennial

Joanna Blair is a Liaison Librarian and Scholarly Communications Librarian at Centennial College Libraries. Joanna has primarily worked as a science librarian throughout her career and is enjoying providing support in her current role for Open Education, the Institutional Repository, and sitting as a member on the Research Ethics Board.

Shelby Stinnissen is the Copyright Services Librarian at Centennial College. In this role, she coordinates the copyright education and outreach services including Centennial's eReserves service. Shelby is passionate about affordable course materials and actively supports the Centennial community in the creation, adaptation, and attribution of OERs.

Conestoga

Holly Ashbourne is the eLearning Liaison at Conestoga Library Services. She works with faculty to develop their skills with tools like Pressbooks and the H5P Studio and works with students to develop their digital literacy skills. Holly also works with the Teaching and Learning department to plan and deliver professional development opportunities such as the Ontario Extend Curator module and sessions covering various open education topics. She is also a member of the eLearning in Libraries Collective, serving on the Symposium planning committee.

Niagara

Siscoe Boschman is a graduate of Queen's University (BAH) and Western University (MLIS). She is currently employed as a Library Facilitator for Information Literacy at Niagara College Libraries in Welland, Ontario, where part of her many duties involves advocating for the adoption of OER within the campus community.


Jaclyn, or Jackie (I answer to both). I have an Honours B.A. in English from McMaster University (2007) and completed my Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of Western Ontario in 2010. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to touch the lives of Niagara College students every day in my role as a Library Facilitator: Information Literacy at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake. My main areas of interest are academic integrity, open educational resources, and educational technologies. However, my greatest joy in life is walking in the woods with my husband and our two chihuahuas!

Seneca

Jennifer is currently the eLearning and Digital Literacies Librarian at Seneca Libraries, and seconded to Seneca’s Centre for Teaching and Learning. She works with the faculty Playground (digital media lab for teaching and learning), is the Educational Strategist and former Project Manager for The Learning Portal, is the Chair of Seneca’s Open Educational Resources Committee, and the Chair of Seneca's Educational Technology Advisory Committee, and a co-founder of the eLearning in Libraries Collective.

In a day she might plan conferences, shoot and edit videos, build online tutorials, work on strategy for OERs or Ed Tech, consult with faculty who want to assign digital projects, and teach faculty how to create websites, instructional videos or digital stories. For more: bit.ly/jennpeters

Sheridan

Sam Cheng, Copyright Coordinator at Sheridan, provides copyright education and support to faculty, staff and students. She has also been involved in OER advocacy and education as well as other library projects related to information literacy, the college’s institutional repository, and e-reserves.

Dr. Bethany Osborne is an innovative educator and researcher with over 20 years of experience building and engaging diverse communities. She has her MA in Adult Education and Community Development in the collaborative program in Women and Gender Studies and a PhD in Adult Education and Community Development from the University of Toronto. Over her career, she has worked with non-profit organizations in both Canada and internationally as a researcher, educator and consultant, enjoying a key role in supporting community transformation through innovative and creative program and project design, grant writing, and working with leadership to develop dynamic learning communities. She is currently a Professor of Teaching and Learning and works as an Educational Development Consultant at Sheridan College. Her research often involves work with systemically excluded populations and an arts-based or creative focus. Her most recent research, Domestic Violence in Immigrant Communities, has been in collaboration with Dr. Ferzana Chaze, Sheridan College; Dr. Purnima George, Ryerson University and Archana Medhekar, a legal practitioner and it has explored the barriers and challenges that racialized immigrant women face in navigating services and supports when they experience domestic violence.

Dr Ferzana Chaze is Professor, Faculty of Applied Health and Community Studies at Sheridan College. Ferzana holds a Master of Social Work from the University of Toronto and the University of Mumbai and a PhD in Social Work from York University. Ferzana’s teaching and research interest include a focus on immigrants and their settlement; diversity and inclusion; social policy; and research methods. She is co-author on the open educational resource Domestic Violence in Immigrant Communities: Case Studies along with Dr. Bethany Osborne, Archana Medhekar and Dr. Purnima George.
