Our project has four main subsystems: the gear train, weights & winding, escapement & pendulum, and the main wooden structure. Click on the images below to learn more about the design decisions and analysis for each subsystem!
Gear Train
To transmit power from the weights to the pendulum system, a gear train system was needed to make sure the clock was being regulated to keep track of the time correctly.
Weights & Winding
The weights power the clock by turning the gears as they slowly descend under gravity. A winding mechanism resets the weights, recharging the clock’s energy to keep it running.
Escapement & Pendulum
The escapement and pendulum regulate the clock’s timing. Each swing of the pendulum allows the escape wheel to move one tooth, controlling the gear train and the timekeeping.
Structure
The structure supports the weights, gears, escapement, and pendulum while keeping everything aligned and functional.
