GME Grand Rounds - Decarbonizing Oncology: Navigating Emissions Reduction and Equitable Care
This is a really great talk from Dr Katie Lichter from the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) about a whole range of topics around climate change and health(care). Dr Lichter discusses the impact of wildfires in California on health outcomes for cancer patients. There is also a framework provided to think about whether patients might be particularly vulnerable to climate change and extreme weather events and a description (with a reaally nice example) of life cycle assessment. I particularly liked the attention that Dr Lichter gave to inequalities and inequities in who potentially faces the greatest burden from climate change. Finally, there is also an appearance by Dr Arianne Teherani from the UCSF Center for Climate, Health and Equity who describes the history and evolution of the Center and some ofthe work that's being done. Definitely worth a watch!
Setting the agenda for climate science
An interview with Dr Sherilee Harper from the University of Alberta in advance of the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. This provides some really great background about the IPCC meeting and what's up for discussion, and how reporting and topic selection will work in the future. Particularly important is the focus on the realty of climate change and what to do about it moving forward. Read it here.
