Climate Change and Health—A New JAMA Series
This is a call for papers for the new JAMA series from Deputy Editor, Dr Mary McDermott, and Editor-in-Chief, Dr Kirsten Bibbens-Domingo. The call is meant to attract research that will provide 'practical' information to clinicians about topics including 'prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of human disease'. In addition, the series will also publish research on adaptation, and feature articles that provide innovative solutions to the impact of climate change and health. Some guidance on article structure and contact information is also provided for interested authors.
Introduction to JAMA Climate Change and Health Series
This is the first article published in the series by Drs Kristie Ebi and Jeremy Hess from the University of Washington Center for Health and the Global Environment. It discusses the substantial impact of healthcare delivery to climate change, the impacts of major climate events on health outcomes, and the idea of proactive adaptation to address and mitigate the impacts of these events. Specifically, they use the example of the 2021 heat dome in the Pacific Northwest (I wrote about this with some colleagues previously, specific to British Columbia in the context of cancer services). All in all, this article is definitely an interesting read and a great start to this new series!
