I remember contacting Lucy’s school directly to find her back during winter break. I have to admit that this is the boldest thing I have ever done. I have no idea how I could gear up and contact a “stranger” (she was a stranger to me back then) since I was very shy. However, I guess it must be fate that brought us together, allowing me to meet this group of excellent teammates around the island (and also Canada) and many dynamic, intelligent kids! It’s my pleasure to be here teaching my favorite subject, English, to more and more kids. When I saw some of the kids flinched from speaking English, I encouraged them; when some spoke English with confidence, I also encouraged them. There’s a long mile ahead, but I believe that they can learn a lot along the journey!

很高興能夠參與這次線上營隊,一開始有點擔心會冷場或是遇到設備上的問題,幸好最後順利進行,也得到小朋友們的感謝和回饋,我感到十分感動與欣喜。在閱讀繪本的途中,會發現小朋友們的程度不一,我們也試著隨機點名,讓他們更有參與感。很高興最後的小活動讓閱讀繪本的環節稍微熱絡起來,也讓氛圍輕鬆許多。很感謝幕後的策劃人員,我們跨越了距離的限制,讓營隊順利進行,雖然仍有些許不足之處,期待下次有機會做得更好。

因為前面幾次參加的經驗,今年暑假也很高興的擔任營隊的老師,但不一樣的是這次是線上方式進行,卻也因此看到了更多可能。例如改用簡報教小朋友繪本,便可在繪本中加入一些動畫效果和小遊戲,引發小朋友對故事的興趣,對於他們的投入與熱情,我也感到很開心。另外,也能觀摩其他老師的上課方式,除了學習新知,我認為這也有益我的人際溝通技巧。很感謝這次的機會,希望未來也可以繼續參與這樣有意義的活動 。

I’ve always been passionate about spreading the importance and necessities of being eco-friendly and normalizing English usage in non-English speaking communities. I’m interested in pursuing opportunities that allow me to develop experiences in these fields; therefore, I accepted Lucy’s invitation to teach effects and solutions of climate change (in English!) without a single doubt.
I wrestled with myself throughout the process of planning my lessons. What are the key concepts of climate change I want kids to comprehend? What is the most engaging and effective way of teaching? What can I do to prevent barriers during my lessons? In the end, I decided my lessons are going to be rounds of entertaining but meaningful competitions. I wanted kids to learn as much as possible in a limited time but still do what they enjoy- have fun!
Overall, my lessons went beyond wonderfully! I’m so glad and grateful I got to interact with the kids without effort, literally. What’s more, it wasn’t me, despairingly pouring my guts to the lessons; it was just me, having a blast discussing ways to reduce climate change with a bunch of enthusiastic kids.
One important lesson I learned from this camp: Do unto others you would have them do unto you. BE cheery and delightful if you want your students to be cheery and delightful. You can’t expect smiling students from grumpy and grouchy teachers. Same goes in life!

因為COVID-19疫情,全國三級警戒的關係,暑期科學營隊辦理方式改為線上教學。這次營隊的主題為探討地球環境的變遷,我上網查詢有關地球生態所面臨的問題,決定探討有關海上漏油所帶來的影響,團隊中我負責教學實驗課程,在設計實驗教案時,希望學生利用家中容易取得的材料進行『海上除油大作戰』實驗,教學過程中,我發現視訊教學無法即時解決學員在實驗時所遇到的問題,不過我可以在線上同步觀摩其他講師的授課內容,這真是一次不同以往的營隊經驗。

今年的疫情使我們改成了線上上課的模式,邀請來自不同地區的小老師利用視訊上課,小朋友的反應非常熱烈,積極地回答我們提出的每一個小問題,打破了地區與國界的距離。不同於以往的營隊,我認為這是一次印象深刻的經驗。
這次的營隊是討論氣候變遷議題,我選擇了「聖嬰現象」當作主題,原本擔心小朋友會無法理解國中的課程,沒想到他們竟然都聽得懂,也能答對我所提出的問題,讓我發現這群小朋友就算受到疫情影響,仍是有著樂於學習的心態。
很感謝有這一次機會讓我體會到了線上上課,也期待下一次的營隊能夠恢復到以前的模式,可以見到這一群好學的小朋友們。

這次是第一次嘗試舉辦線上營隊,做法和實體營隊完全不同,我們只能透過小小的螢幕與小朋友們互動,帶環保存錢筒製作的志工說小朋友有問題時,他只能口述講解,無法直接給予協助。但志工們在這過程中找出教學訣竅,讓小朋友踴躍地回答問題。
線上營隊也讓我們不受地點的限制。之前招收志工時都要考慮到交通問題,但現在我們不用擔心,這次還有加拿大的志工分享氣候變遷對加拿大的影響。
待在家上課也有另一個好處,我經常能看到家長或爺爺奶奶出現在鏡頭前跟著小朋友們一起做實驗和勞作,線上營隊讓家長可以一起參與活動,變成一個親子活動。
氣候變遷對世界的影響很大,今年年初台灣也遇到嚴重的缺水。因此這次營隊主題為氣候變遷,探討它的影響及愛地球的方法,魏子閎小朋友在參與活動後說:「我以前不知道地球現在這麼嚴重,從現在起我會好好環保,不會再傷害地球。」。
我希望每個小朋友可以改變世界,和他們的朋友及家人講解氣候變遷的嚴重性,再傳遞給更多人。一傳十,十傳百,這種蝴蝶效應會帶給世界一個比我自己一個人拯救世界大好幾倍的影響。我相信如果大家都一起努力,一定會達成。

因為疫情的關係,這次的營隊很特別。與上次實體到學校跟小朋友做互動的感覺也很不一樣,這次只能透過鏡頭與小朋友們做互動。這次所負責的工作與上次也不太一樣,我負責的是藝術時間,我從網路上找到了有關環保存錢筒的製作,除了能跟藝術創作扣合,也還能利用環保的材料,我覺得應該滿適合小孩子的。
真正在教小朋友時,覺得又是一個有點困難的體驗。在鏡頭前與實體仍然不一樣,小朋友有問題時只能舉手發問,我無法直接幫他們操作,覺得比較可惜,就只能用嘴巴說。所以在第一梯次的營隊時,我覺得我沒有教得很好,速度也抓得比較趕,但後來看到小孩的成品,覺得滿多都非常有創意,也讓我下周想要更努力的教,讓我又有動力。第二梯次雖然我的設備上有點問題,一直沒辦法順利的把簡報分享出來,但直接跟他們講並開始做,也較上周流暢,且看到更多有創意的發想,真的覺得非常有成就感。
這次帶的這個營隊,雖然形式上與上次不同,但是教完小孩後依舊有著滿滿成就,也發現給小孩的就是要有滿滿的耐心及愛心,才能讓過程進行得更加順利。在稱讚他們的當下,看到了他們給我的燦笑,更是讓我嘴角不禁跟著上揚。

很高興都有機會參加營隊並教小朋友實驗,我覺得每次最開心的不是他們學會了實驗的道理,反而是他們一直失敗後突然成功的瞬間,因為他們露出來的笑臉真很溫暖又很真誠,所以我真的很喜歡帶營隊,而且不只是他們很開心,我也能多學到很多課外的知識,不管是學科,還是跟別人的相處。

這整整兩個禮拜的教學過程我學到很多,和前兩年不同的是,這次是用視訊來上課,所以也面臨到了很多之前不會有的困難,網速更是一大問題,但是結束後我覺得無比的充實,雖然只能面對著電腦鏡頭,但就好像是之前一樣和小朋友們相處融洽,而且我也在聽其他講師講課的時候學到了很多不一樣的東西,能同時做到教學和學習新知識,讓我覺得非常開心

在這擔任了兩個禮拜的營隊老師的過程中,我學習到了很多,在第一個禮拜因為是第一次擔任授課者的角色,所以對於教學方式是很生疏的,內心是各種情緒交錯,使我覺得萬分緊張,所以在教學過程中有出現一點瑕疵,所以在上完課後有對於原本的教學做出修正。在第二個禮拜上課時,雖然學生已經是第二梯次的孩子了,但我就有掌握到自己的教學模式,所以就有把想教的實驗知識完整的教他們,這應該就是所謂的「教學相長」吧,此次的營隊使我學到很多。

The two weeks seemed to pass by so fast, and we are approaching the end of the second week for the climate change science camp. For me, as this is my third time volunteering for camps, moving entirely online is a new experience, as we can’t clearly see the body language of the kid, and I do miss the occasional fun we have afterwards.
The first week was, to be honest, a shocker. Perhaps with the younger group of students and being new to the online format, it was incredibly challenging and sometimes frustrating, especially when reading a picture book that I encourage the students to participate in. Despite this, it is also incredibly rewarding to see the kids finally warming up in both my session as well as later in the camp. It is through this week that I really gained an understanding and appreciation in how to keep the students engaged.
The second week is a stark contrast to the first week, with a lot of students being especially active in participation and often put me in awe with both their knowledge but also their level of participation. I was practically sweating and panting by the end of my session as I have to match the spirit. It is through this week that I find that I am weak with deciding who answers what questions, and I often feel bad when I accidentally leave out someone or seeing the disappointed face of the kids when I didn’t call on them.
Overall, this was a very enjoyable two weeks, and it is incredibly humbling to be part of such a massive group effort. Thank you to all the volunteers who ensure the smooth running of the camp, and all the students for their participation, it means a lot. As I am rapidly approaching the end of high school, I appreciate this camp for bringing joy and purpose into the summer and I hope in person camp can happen sometime before the end of senior year.

很開心能參加到這次的營隊,從上次的寒令營就從別人的限時看到這個活動,當時就很想參加了,但可惜活動已經進行了,不過幸好這次有能參與到暑假的營隊,我覺得這次最特別的是線上教學,由於疫情關係,所以只能使用視訊方式來與小朋友分享這次要帶給他們的東西,當然的兩個梯次的小孩也都回答得非常踴躍,讓我覺得很開心,因為很害怕小朋友都不給回應,當然的因為這是第一次的參加營隊,我覺得我還有很多地方需要改進,在帶小朋友的時候,既緊張又刺激,不過這都是一次很好的學習,所以我很開心有這次學習的機會。
