2021 Teenage Light Climate Change Online Camp:
The original plan was to host a camp in an elementary school; however, the sudden wave of COVID-19 threatened to stop our plan. Everyone was scared, and nobody wanted to be in danger. But, instead of canceling our plans, we turned it into an online camp. Online camps have many benefits; for one, we are not limited by distance, our students this time reached students from Chiayi to Kaoshung, and our volunteers are from all around the world. Another benefit of the online camp is that families can join in our activities which we had never tried before. This benefit also gives family members a chance to learn about climate change.
Our camp went from July 5th to 16th, and the two-week camp was separated into two sections, each a week. Both begin from 10:00 to 11:30 in the morning. Because Teenage Light believes that children should see what climate change is to protect their future, there is a topic each day, Climate Change, Effects and Solutions, Global Warming, Water Crisis, and Extreme Weather. Every day, we teach students about the topic, do a science experiment, read an English Children's book and do fun things; the activities are related to the topic each day.
At the start of each day, we explain the topic of the day. It may sound easy, but in fact, many children don't know what climate change or global warming is. In our lessons, we taught them the definitions of the topics through fun and exciting games. For example, we taught them how to solve climate change with simple actions by playing an answer race.
Knowledge is power. If the students know the science behind climate change, they can think of better ways to solve it. For example, in 海上撈油大作戰, they find out how severe marine oil spills are and how hard they are to clean up. Marine oil spills may seem to have no relation to climate change, but they actually do. Marine oil spills can disturb our ocean and affect the climate.
Climate change will destroy our beautiful homes. Reading children's books lets the children realize how beautiful our earth is and learn to treasure our planet.
In Arts, Crafts, and Fun, the students get to make things out of recycled items at home and learn about climate change in Canada from volunteers in Canada.
Day 1
Climate change brings heat waves, wildfires, droughts, floods, and other catastrophes to our planet, in our class, we taught about the effects climate change brings.
When the hot air meets the cold plate, water drops will form on the bottom of the plate; this is how clouds are formed!
We read the book “Planet Earth” with the students and introduced them to the animals.
Our Canadian volunteer talked about the climate change in Canada.
Day 2
Through a quick quiz game, kids know more about the effects and solutions of climate change.
Marine oil spills can affect climate change. By cleaning the oil out of our “sea”, the students learned the importance of marine oil spills and how difficult it is to clean.
Learn how to save our world by reading the Earth Book.
We teach the children what transportations can prevent climate change.
Day 3
In this lesson, we introduced the “El Niño” and its effects. Although this effect is concentrated in the southern hemisphere, it can affect Taiwan as well.
In this experiment, the children made a Convection Spiral experiment and learned that hot air rises.
By reading “We Planted a Tree”, the kids got to know how important trees are in our lives and will protect it more.
We made a piggy bank out of used milk cartons. This eco-friendly piggy bank can store money for us.
Day 4
Water is a necessity to us. We experience droughts every year, so we should understand the water crisis we face. In this activity we taught kids about the water crisis around the world.
Out of a Ziplock bag and permanent marker, we made a water cycle experiment to understand the process of water cycle.
This book is about rain. It teaches us about the cycle of rain (how water drops turn into rain, and why puddles disappear).
The evaporating water forms clouds. The kids drew the process of evaporation and remembered it.
Extreme weather includes hurricanes, heavy rain, drought, and so on. In this activity, we taught students about extreme weather.
Day 5
We teach the children what transportations can prevent climate change.
This experiment is made from two bottles. When given a spinning motion, a hurricane appears. In this process, the students learned how a hurricane is formed.
「Desert Girl, Monsoon Boy」
This book tells us about the different weathers in deserts and monsoon areas and what happens there.
A volunteer from Canada taught us about the extreme weather in Canada and invited students to ask questions.
