Brianna Shea Mowry is the Director of Choirs at Cleveland Charter High School in Reseda, California. In her short tenure at the Land, she led both the Advanced Treble Ensemble and the Cavalier Chorale to receive ratings of Superior at festival, and also to win Gold at Worldstrides in San Franciso, California, which earned both groups an invitation to Carnegie Hall.
Ms. Mowry graduated from California State University Northridge in 2011 with a Bachelor of Art in Music Education with a choral emphasis. She studied voice under Diane Ketchie, a renowned operatic soprano, and was a member of the Northridge Singers, under the direction of Paul Smith. She was selected as a member of the music honor society, Pi Kappa Lambda for her excellence in music education, and graduated with honors. She earned her teaching credential in 2012 and a Master’s of English Education in 2017, which was also received with honors.
Today, Ms. Mowry is attending San Jose State University, where she is studying the inclusion of Transgender and non-gender-conforming students in the binary space of traditional Western choirs. Through her research she hopes to end the use of gendered language in the classroom and create safe and inclusive spaces for all individuals who wish to participate in vocal music.
