Having enjoyed Cubs and Scouts as a youth member, with the opportunity to attend an Australian Jamboree and the following year a World Jamboree, I was keen for my own children to join scouts. Coming from a small country town in Victoria, for my Children to join came with some strings attached, become a Cub leader. This is one of the best things that I have done. Seeing the empowerment a youth member gets when they achieve something that they insisted they could not do is why I enjoy being a leader. Having helped out in the Joey’s, Cub’s and Scout sections while in Yackandandah, I was able to follow the journey of many of the youth through the section.
My original cub name was Baloo, which was my father's Cub name and was changed to Yogi for a Victorian Cuboree. Our group joined with two other groups in the area to form a pack. As there was already another Baloo, the cubs came up with Yogi for me. It has stuck and I think of the youth members as little Boo Boo's. They often teach Yogi a thing or two, but always come and ask for words of wisdom, as long as they bring Coffee and a Picnic Basket.
Since moving to Brisbane, I have completed my Scout Leader training and I am on track to complete my Wood Badge project by the end of the year, as well as further training to provide a better program for the youth members.
Yours in Scouting,
Stewart
