I think this is an excellent use of augmented reality. A common problem with raising children these days is managing screen time. It is very easy for a parent to set their child in front of a tablet while they go about the house. Many children love to play on tablets, so this app may really catch their attention. This app encourages children to move around while using the tablet they use regularly. It keeps children active even while they use a tablet.
I also really like that they started to develop educational stories. One of their newer stories, Clio's Cosmic Quest, takes the user through outer space, and along the way, teaches them about celestial bodies. A cartoon comet, Clio, takes the user through different areas of the solar system. The child has to move around the room and responds to prompts on the screen. At certain points, the child can also tap on different areas of the planet to learn more about them.
Below is Wonderscope's promotional video for Clio's Cosmic Quest.
I think it is a great intersection of different techniques to get children excited to learn. It uses technology that they are familiar with and enjoy using. It also encourages the user to participate in the learning experience. The user can move around the environment to see more of the object, and the app prompts the user to talk back to it. These interactive features make it an attractive way to teach children. I hope Wonderscope continues to create these short educational stories.
