Our project serves a community in Kagarama, Rwanda that is home to roughly 1,000 families. The community gets all its water from an unprotected spring about 2 kilometers away. In March of 2024, we sent a team to perform an assessment of the site and get to know the members of the community. We found that the water situation in Kagarama was dire, and the community was in need of immediate help.

The water in Kagarama was unprotected and highly contaminated, contributing to high mortality and morbidity rates within the community. Clemson EWB partnered with Kagarama to design and implement a solution to provide access to clean water for the community.

The solution that Clemson EWB has decided on was to build a spring box around the water source, to protect it from contamination and provide a point of distribution. We sourced materials (such as concrete, gravel, and rebar) locally, but brought our own tools and testing equipment from our lab in Clemson.
