Townsend’s Town Clerk has officially opened registration for 2026 dog licenses, reminding residents that all dogs must be licensed annually by February 28, 2026 to avoid late fees.
Spayed/Neutered: $8
Unaltered: $13
Renewals and registrations can be completed online, by mail, or in person at Town Hall.
Residents who register or renew by January 31 will have their dogs automatically entered into Townsend’s annual #1 Dog Tag Contest, where one dog is randomly selected to receive the symbolic first tag of the year.
The town emphasized the importance of timely compliance.
After March 1, a $10 late fee is added.
After May 1, an additional $50 fine is assessed.
Both charges must be paid to obtain a 2026 license after that date.
To register, dog owners must provide proof of a current rabies vaccination. Online applicants must upload a digital copy of the vaccine certificate.
In person: Town Clerk’s Office, Townsend Town Hall
By mail: Check payable to Town of Townsend
Online: Through the town’s payment portal
When paying online or by mail, owners will receive the license and metal tag by mail unless they request in-office pickup.
Residents are asked to notify the Clerk’s Office if a previously licensed dog has been moved or has passed away to prevent unnecessary notices.
Town officials say licensing helps ensure public safety, supports compliance with state law, and keeps town records current. With the contest and multiple payment options available, the town hopes for strong early participation heading into the new year.
