Located in the Sawtooth Mountains just outside the city of Sun Valley, Idaho, the Hemingway Memorial is an excellent place to take your family for a short hike near the Trail Creek, just east of the Sun Valley Resort. The short trail is filled with beautiful scenery and is open year-round. If you are visiting during the summer months, this area is covered in wildflowers, making it a gorgeous experience. In the winter, it is covered in snow, making it even more picturesque. If you want to stay in Ketchum, there are several hotels nearby. You might also want to stay an extra day or two to visit nearby attractions like Sun Valley.

Hemingway’s Final Home

Hemingway's home in Ketchum, Idaho was his final home and he lived there from 1959 until 1961. The home is filled with Hemingway’s belongings and artifacts, including his typewriter and books. The home is most famous for the parties Hemingway threw here and the love he had for his wife, Mary. Hemingway visited the Sun Valley area for several years prior to purchasing the home for $50,000. The home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. It is not available for public viewing. The Nature Conservancy acquired ownership in 1986 and in May 2017, ownership was transferred to the Community Library, a privately funded public library, located in Ketchum. The Community Library is home to the Hemingway Seminars, held annually in the fall.

Whether you are traveling with children or are visiting by yourself, the Hemingway Memorial is a great place to spend time with the family. The memorial, featuring a bust of Ernest Hemingway sculpture, by Robert Berks, was dedicated on Hemingway’s birthday, July 21, 1966, five years after the writer ended his life at his house in nearby Ketchum. There is also a plaque with the inscription "Best of all he loved the fall, the leaves yellow on the cottonwoods. Leaves floating on the trout streams and above the hills. The high blue windless skies, now he will be a part of them forever."
