What is Sandplay therapy?
Sandplay is a non-directive play which involves the use of elements such as sand and water, and figurines that serve as images from all over the world which come from the unconscious or what Jung would call the collective unconscious.
In Sandplay the therapist, the patient, the images and the sandtray are part of the intersubjective space in the therapy. The therapist holds the space by being present without interrupting as they witness, the patient’s unconscious entering the space bringing forward whatever the unconscious wants to bring forward. Dora Kalff called this the ‘free and protected space.’

The benefits of Sandplay Therapy
Sandplay therapy helps heal the mind body and soul. Sandplay includes the body as you put your hands in the sand you get in touch with the natural elements of the earth creating a movement and connection from the external to the internal world. The miniatures create a magnetic resonance with the unconscious and together activate the healing energies of the psyche. The sandplay process stimulates creative healing powers by regulating the psyche as self awareness through the senses occurs while the sandplay scene creates profound insight and spiritual awakening. During the process the therapist serves as a mirror containing and integrating the space without judgement and interpretations.
Dora states, “The free and protected space comes into being when the therapist can be fully present with the child/patient and is able to participate internally just as intensely with everything that's happening with the child/patient. As guardian the therapist creates both the space and the freedom as well as the boundaries. Successful transformation occurs when a child's innate energies can happen within the boundaries, within the container; not in unlimited infinity” (Dora Kalff p. 5)
