In this unit, we will continue to review some basic arithmetic skills that students should have learnt in Grade 6-8. We will review the topics such as Operations with Decimals (Add/Subtract/Multiply/Divide) without the use of a calculator, Operations with Fractions (Reduce/Rewrite/Multiple/Divide/Add/Subtract) without the use of a calculator as well as Order of Operations with both Decimals and Fractions.
Our main goals in this unit are:
Be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide (reasonable) decimals without the use of a calculator.
Be able to reduce any fractions as well as to convert any improper fraction to a mixed fraction and back.
Be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide (reasonable) proper/improper/mixed fractions without the use of a calculator.
Be able to change any fraction to its decimal form with/without the aid of a calculator and compare it to another real number.
Apply BEDMAS to decimals and fractions to perform manual calculations of various levels of difficulties and complexities.
To lay the foundation for the rules and ideas behind operations with rational numbers as they will be crucial when students move on to work with Rational Expression in later courses.
If time permitting, to learn how to work with complex calculations of Decimals and Fractions on the calculator.
