This year I logged 23 books, down 7 from last year but it's probably pandemic fatigue. Here are some thoughts on a number of them:
The year included some good non-fiction reads. My R.J. Reynolds history was enhanced by Going Down Tobacco Road by Gene Hoots. I also read The Fabric of Civilization by Virginia Postrel and Agatha Christie: An Elusive Woman by the lovely Lucy Worsley released this year. Some more non-fiction though not as good.
The WDS book club had started picking "best sellers" that were leaving me a little cold, but I just went with the flow. Predictably, though, the BL club had some winners like Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin, Rebecca by Daphne du Marier, Call Me Cassandra by Marcial Gala, and a charming book Pocket Atlas of Remote Islands by Judith Schalansky that even enticed the WDS folks.
This year also had me again revisit Babbitt by Sinclair Lewis, my all time favorite novel.
