What is an uninsured service?
Uninsured services are services provided by your physician which are not paid for by OHIP. In general, these are services which are categorized as not medically necessary and can include items such as documentation for employment purposes, cosmetic procedures, missed appointments, form completion, prescription renewals without an insured consultation and physical examinations for schooling, work or licensing purposes.
My doctor did not charge me before. Why am I being charged now?
Your doctor may have waived these fees previously as a favor. Unfortunately, the demand for these uninsured services has increased to a threshold which has begun to affect the ability of your doctor to provide OHIP funded care. Provincial health care funding for family doctors continues to be limited to less than the rate of inflation, which has reduced the number of family doctors and proportionally increased the amount of work requested of your doctor. This directly impacts the availability and type of services patients will receive. Applying fees can help in several ways:
-improves organization, comprehensiveness and redundancy of requests for uninsured services
-reduces unnecessary visits/assessments
-helps fund administrative support required to more efficiently deliver insured and uninsured services
How can I avoid or reduce the cost of fees charged to me?
Some of the most common fees charged have to do with missing appointments, canceling without notice and prescription renewals. Ensuring that in person appointments are attended by planning ahead and arriving on time can be helpful, especially when weather or construction are to be expected. Call ahead if there is an unanticipated delay. For phone appointments, ensuring you have a full battery, good reception, a quiet environment and a phone that will accept calls and ring out are important. Prescriptions (barring insurance related prescriptions) renewed during an appointment do not carry charges. Ensuring you request all the prescriptions you need when you see your doctor or pay for a renewal without assessment is a good practice to avoid being charged for an additional request. Our staff are trained to ensure each prescription order is verified before it is finalized.
I do not have the means to pay for an uninsured service. What can I do?
Your doctor will take into consideration the nature of your request and the type of hardship you are encountering when determining a price. You should let your doctor know when it will be difficult to pay so they can properly determine how to proceed.
How do I renew a prescription without an appointment?
You can contact the clinic by email at cksunmd(at)gmail.com, phone at 416-242-2850x3 or in person to let us know which medications you require and which pharmacy to send the prescription to. Your request will be reviewed and you will be notified when it has been processed. Some prescriptions may require tests or a discussion before they are issued. Either way, you will be notified and an invoice will be emailed only where appropriate. You can pay this invoice online and then receive your prescription at your requested pharmacy.
