Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS)
At CJCP, Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS) is a proactive program to provide students and teachers with research based preventative and early intervention approaches to support student learning. The goals are to increase student academic and school performance through a systematic approach.
I&RS can be utilized for students struggling with any of the following:
Learning
Behavior
Health
The I&RS process aims to:
1. remove potential barriers to learning
2. decrease problematic behaviors
3. provide support to assist the student’s learning processes
I&RS accomplishes this goal through:
Collecting data regarding student’s ability to function at school
Using data to develop and implement an action plan to help students be successful
Assessing the effectiveness of the interventions
Procedures for Referrals
Step 1: Referral
Teachers, counselors, and parents can make referrals based on student need by completing a form and giving to I&RS coordinator
Request medical documentation when necessary
Step 2: Information Collection
Coordinator sends out forms to all teachers and staff members who work with the student to collect data for initial meeting
Collect past test scores (including NJSLA, PARCC, reading assessments, PSATs, etc)
Collect past grades (at least two years of previous report cards)
Step 3: Inform Parents
Coordinator will inform parents that the process has started, what I&RS is and how it can help their child
Coordinator will ask for input from parents and invite them for a meeting
Step 4: Initial Meeting / Problem Solving
I&RS team will meet to discuss data and determine necessary action
Brainstorm some potential options to offer to parents
Step 5: Planning Meeting
Parents, teachers, and I&RS team will meet to create an I&RS action plan to address student needs
Timelines for check-ins and assessment of plan will be determined
All teachers will be notified in writing of plan and accommodations
Step 6: Implementation
Teachers and parents will implement the action plan as determined by the team
Coordinator will follow up with students, parents, and teachers to assess the success of the plan bi-weekly or as necessary
Step 7: Assessment
Team will reconvene in 8 weeks (or earlier if necessary) to determine the success of the plan
If some progress was made, the team can determine to alter the plan as necessary
If little progress is made, the team may determine that a referral to the Child Study Team is necessary
If the child has made significant progress, the team can determine to close the case
