Civicate Youth is going to be at the 2026 EmpowerLA Youth Conference! 🤩
📍Learn about how we're shaping youth civic engagement in Los Angeles, and find out how to get involved with Civicate Youth.
-Saturday, June 6th 2026 from 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM
-Los Angeles City Hall, 200 N Spring St, Los Angeles, CA 90012
-Lunch Provided
Today we had the opportunity to table at the @empowerla Youth Conference at LA City Hall! 🏛️
We met so many LA teens who were curious about civic power and how young people can make change in their own communities. Many students stopped by our table, answered our mini poll, asked questions, and took flyers to learn more about how youth can run @ 14 and vote @ 16.
We asked:
“What stops youth from participating?”
The results showed:
📌 44% said: “I didn’t know I could”
📌 38% said: “I don’t know where to start”
📌 10% said: “Meetings are intimidating”
📌 8% said: “Adults don’t take youth seriously”
82% of participants said the biggest barriers were not knowing they could participate or not knowing where to start. This indicates that youth civic participation can only begin with awareness and clear next steps.
We are so excited to see how many young Angelenos care about neighborhood councils and want to get involved. This is exactly why we keep doing the work we do! 💫

Saturday looked like this: a room full of LA teens already building things — short films, games, music, animation — learning they can build local policy too. 💛🖤
We spent the morning at @tumo_losangeles tabling for Civicate Youth and chatted with 12–18 year olds about how teens in LA can:
→ Run for Neighborhood Council Youth Representative at 14
→ Register and vote in NC elections at 16
→ Get involved in local government with no citizenship requirement
If you're an LA teen who hasn't found TUMO yet — it's a free after-school center where you can learn pretty much any creative or tech skill, with mentors and no prior experience required. Easy yes.
Thanks to everyone who came by. We loved meeting you. 🫶

We are hosting a series interactive outreach booths to show LA teens that local government is their space too. At our booths, youth 16+ can learn how to register to vote in Los Angeles Neighborhood Council elections, while youth 14+ can discover how to run as Youth Representatives and lead their communities. Through quick one-on-one help, QR-code guides, and email newsletters, we’ll walk students through every step from signing up to vote to becoming a youth representative of their community.
Research reveals alarming statistics about vehicle idling at schools. Idling cars emit 20 times more pollution than vehicles traveling at 30 mph, and students exposed to this traffic-related air pollution experience 20-30% reduced lung function compared to those in cleaner environments. During afternoon pick-up times, schools show elevated levels of benzene, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and other toxic compounds that trigger asthma attacks and respiratory problems.
What We'll Do:
Put up “No-Idling Zone” signs during after-school pick-up in the teen parking-lot exit.
Collect driver pledges and measure change in idling.
