Dorrance was named in honor of Oliver B. Dorrance, a superintendent with the Kansas Pacific Railroad. The arrival of the railroad in 1867 helped bring settlers and growth to the area, and the community soon became an important center for commerce and agriculture in eastern Russell County. Today, the town proudly carries the name of one of the railroad leaders who helped shape its early development.
Located just minutes from beautiful Wilson Lake and Wilson State Park, Dorrance offers visitors easy access to some of Kansas' most scenic outdoor recreation. Butterfield Overland Dispatch
Dorrance, Kansas sits directly along the historic Smoky Hill Trail route used by the Butterfield Overland Despatch (BOD) in 1865. Wagon ruts from the trail and BOD watering stops are still visible south of the town on restricted access land, and you can find several physical "BOD 1865" limestone post markers in the area.
The Route: The BOD ran 592 miles from Atchison, KS, to Denver, CO, following the Smoky Hill River.
Local Landmarks: Dorrance is located in Russell County, an area deeply tied to the Butterfield Trail history and the post rock limestone markers erected by historian Howard C. Raynesford.
Exhibits: To see preserved BOD stagecoaches, county records, and frontier artifacts, you can visit the Butterfield Trail Museum in Russell Springs, located about 125 miles west of Dorrance.
