Opportunities for CS in Learning

Why use citizen science in learning and education? Because it:

  • Enriches the curricula
  • Improves student engagement and learning outcomes
  • Provides an environment in which to explore science and to get used to technology
  • Develops environmental competency
  • Ticks more boxes than just science - citizen science is cross-curricular, including humanities
  • Increases student interest in science (and more)
  • CS activities can lead to national curriculum policy changes
  • Researchers benefit from the knowledge transfer with students
  • Students benefit from contact with scientists. Scientists benefit from contact with students
  • More environmental monitoring
  • Improves lives--makes students more curious
  • Improves lives--makes an impact on the immediate environment
  • Empowers students
  • Participating in authentic research motivates students
  • CS is real, not pretend like most classroom work
  • Builds teacher confidence in science
  • Potential curricula / education structures
  • Students learn the scientific method / process
  • Democratic participation - see real outcomes on a large scale
