Peter Thurton (Peter) is a Canadian financial services and Energy lawyer. Peter’s expertise is in the area of ethics and regulatory compliance. For over thirty years Peter has represented some of Canada’s largest financial institutions (including Manulife Financial, CIBC and Royal Bank Insurance) and in the energy sector, Enbridge Inc.
Throughout his career Peter has been a leader in providing legal advice and business strategy in addressing regulatory, compliance and ethics crises nationally and globally for the above noted companies. In addition to his traditional practice in regulatory compliance and ethics, the latter part of Peter’s career at Enbridge saw him focused on workplace investigations and matters pertaining to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Some of Peter’s specific achievements includes: (i) the appointment to lead the establishment of financial services market conduct standards for all of Canada’s brokerage industry, (ii) negotiating an international labour crisis for Manulife Financial and acting as the company’s media spokesperson in this regard, (iii) lead counsel for the world’s third largest life insurer Manulife Financial for its first major outsourcing agreement in Asia, (iv) Chosen by CIBC to represent it in dealings with the South African banking industry as it transformed to a post apartheid economy and (v) strategic advisor concerning a workplace harassment matter that was covered my most if not all of the world’s leading national newspapers.
Throughout his career Peter has been a frequent speaker both in North American and beyond on the importance of ethics and compliance to good corporate behaviour i.e. to doing business right. Since 2020 Peter has been a frequent lecturer on corporate ethics to Rome Business School, Rome Italy.
In his undergraduate studies at St. Francis Xavier University, Peter was the recipient of numerous academic scholarships and awards. He also received an academic entrance scholarship to study law at Osgoode Hall Law School, in Toronto. He’s a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University where he was a Rhodes Scholar Finalist.
In his spare time Peter is an avid reader of Greek and Medieval philosophy, specifically the philosophy of the great Italian philosopher Thomas Da Aquino, he’s also an avid gardener, and an avid collector of improvised music, specifically Jazz music. Since is self imposed retirement last year Peter has been doing volunteer work with two local Toronto churches of different denominations focusing on refugees from Afghanistan and on providing clothing and money to the many less fortunate. Peter has also been appointed to the Advisory Board of Canada’s largest art gallery the Art Gallery of Ontario to advise on the global purchase and promotion of art and artist of Black people the world over. Peter also spends three to four months a year in his beloved Italy.
Peter’s proudest achievement in life and his total joy is having raised his most beautiful son and gift from the Creator, Matthew Miles.
Jacqueline is the Patient Care Manager, Interprofessional Resource Team, Palliative Care and the Transitional Care Unit for Unity Health Toronto where she is responsible for the development of quality improvement initiatives and ensures that the care delivery models continue to evolve to meet the changing patient/family and departmental needs.
Jacqueline is a registered nurse with a Master in Health Administration (MHSc) from the Institute of Health Policy, Management, and Evaluation at the University of Toronto and is a Certified Health Executive with the Canadian College of Health Leaders. She brings over 25 years of exceptional multidisciplinary care and leadership. Jacqueline serves as a Board Director for Sherbourne Health and is the Chair of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) committee. In addition, Jacqueline is an active member of the Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Indigenous Reconciliation Committee at the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto. Jacqueline is also dynamic and experienced speaker and has been invited to speak about the ‘Black experience in health care’ at the York Region Alliance of African Canadian Communities Black history month celebration.
Jacqueline resides in Toronto with her daughter Ella Rose.
Antoinette Morgan is an award-winning school social worker for her work with students in equity, diversity, and inclusivity in the public school system. She has received the Hidden Innovators Award presented by the City of Markham, as well as the York Region District School Board Secondary Vice Principal Association Community Service Award. Presently, she is the Director of Student Well-being at Bayview Glen Independent School. She has previously worked at other independent schools as a school social worker.
Antoinette’s experience is multi-faceted; in addition to her work in the public and independent school systems, she has lengthy experience in social services and the arts. Always ready for the opportunity for growth and development, outside of the education sector she has had extensive experience working as a union steward in Canadian film industry, a social service worker, advocating for the less fortunate, and a crisis counsellor supporting families impacted by gender-based violence. Additionally, she served as school council chair for a high school at the YRDSB, represented members as a union representative for both OPSEU and USW, and currently runs an affinity group for Black high school students.
She contends her true passion and life’s calling is her work with children and youth. She relishes the opportunity to provide social and emotional support to students, to advocate for their well-being, and to empower and help them tackle the issues that confront them so they can achieve their full potential.
Antoinette is a life-long learner and an alma mater of University of Toronto (Hons. BA), York University (MA), Dalhousie University (BSW, MSW) and Seneca College. She remains curious and looks forward for more opportunities to learn and grow.
Early Years
Dwight was born on the island of St. Lucia. He moved to Canada at 6 years old and grew up in Toronto in the Flemingdon Park neighborhood. At age 13 he was accepted to St. Michael’s college school where he was an average student and played for the basketball team throughout his time at the school. He won a championship each year.
He went to The University of Toronto where he obtained an undergrad degree in Criminology.
Career
He began his career as a life insurance agent, in 1998. Two years later, he was lured to head office as a product specialist at the Equinox Financial Group head office in Toronto.
Using the knowledge Dwight attained in this role, he became a respected wholesaler with two major insurers where he worked directly with advisors to grow their business.
In 2009 he joined Ontario East Insurance Agency as a Marketing Director, where his role expanded to include assisting with casework on all product lines for advisors aligned with the agency. This has included positioning cases with family, high networth individuals, and professional clients. While in this role Ontario East remained a consistently strong performer for insurance and investment sales.
In 2017, he became a full partner, and in 2022 he became the Managing Partner and majority shareholder of the firm.
After a short term as owner, he sold his business along with his partner firms to a US-based financial company. He currently works there as a Vice -President of Distribution.
He has been married for 20 years to his wonderful wife Michelle and has two wonderful daughters.
Marlon is the Senior Sales Director at Teladoc Health. He is a business development enthusiast with extensive domestic and international experience in sales, marketing, and strategic planning. He leads through curiosity, encouraging individual growth and inspiration, and fostering cohesive teamwork. Marlon is an innovative contributor that actively pursues opportunities and embraces challenges. He has proven client relationships success with industry leaders, and enterprise clients such as Bell Canada, CSA, Sun Life Financial, and Great-West Life.
Marlon is an Ottawa native and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Human Kinetics from St. Francis Xavier University, and an MBA from McGill University. Marlon also holds an executive development course from McGill University. Marlon is a dynamic and experienced speaker and has presented at numerous conferences and educational institutions.
Regarded as one of the leading coaches in Canada, Kurt Downes currently coaches athletes from grassroots through professional levels with Border City Athletics Club. Downes has been awarded Athletics Canada’s Dr. Doug Clement Award for Coach of the Year (2019) and Canadian Running Magazine Community Builder of the Year (2020). Downes has coached two Olympians, one Paralympian, and multiple Team Canada athletes. Downes led Brandon McBride to a Canadian record in the 800m. He has served on Team Canada’s coaching staff several times, including the Tokyo Olympics 2020, IAAF World Athletics Championship 2019, Pan American Senior Championships 2019, NACAC Senior Championships 2018, IAAF World Championship 2017, Pan American Junior Championships 2015, IAAF World Youth Championships 2013, IAAF World Junior Championships 2012.
