We adopt a framework inspired by Williams' works (2019a, 2019b, 2021a, 2021b) on circular cities, focusing on seven key actions to facilitate circular and regenerative urban and regional development:
Loop
Closing resource loops to create a circularity where materials are reused, recycled, and recovered, minimizing waste and maximizing resource efficiency.
Adapt
Enhancing the capacity of urban systems and infrastructure to respond flexibly to changing conditions and emerging challenges, ensuring resilience and adaptability.
Ecologically Regenerate
Restoring and enhancing natural ecosystems within city regions to optimize the delivery of ecosystem services.
Localize
Prioritizing local resources, production, and consumption to reduce environmental footprints, pursue self-sufficiency, and support local resilience.
Substitute
Replacing harmful and non-renewable materials and practices with sustainable alternatives to reduce environmental impacts and promote the use of renewable resources.
Optimize
Improving the efficiency of resource use and urban systems through effective technologies and data-driven approaches.
Share
Creating systems and platforms that enable the sharing of resources, spaces, and services to reduce overall consumption and foster community connections.

Our approaches emphasize four major analytical frameworks:
Systems Thinking
It involves understanding and managing complex systems by considering the interrelationships and interdependencies within the system. Systems thinking helps us to see the bigger picture and to develop strategies that address root causes rather than symptoms. This is the analytical foundation of the Circular Development Initiative, underpinning all approaches.
Transition Thinking
This approach is oriented towards future sustainability and transformation. It involves envisioning and facilitating the shift from current unsustainable practices to sustainable ones. Transition thinking focuses on long-term goals and the pathways to achieve them, recognizing that change is a gradual process that requires strategic planning and action.
Spatial Thinking
This approach emphasizes multi-scale and place-based strategies. It considers the spatial dimensions of development, ensuring that solutions are tailored to the specific characteristics and needs of different locations. Spatial thinking helps to optimize the use of space and resources, enhancing the livability and functionality of urban and regional areas.
Collaborative Thinking
Recognizing that sustainable development requires collective effort, this approach focuses on fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders. Collaborative thinking encourages partnerships and participatory processes, ensuring that all voices are heard and that solutions are co-created. It leverages the strengths and resources of different actors to achieve common goals.
