First of all, apologies for not having a movie of the week last week. I was insanely busy last week and was not able to get around to doing one. Anyways, so, my friends and I watched the 2020 remake of this movie Sunday night. We were extremely disappointed. The 2020 remake of Mulan was long, boring, and terrible, so we watched the original after. Needless to say, the original is a million times better than the remake. With amazing visuals, music, and characters, I highly recommend not even watching the remake and just going back and watching the original. I made this my movie of the week in order to raise awareness of how bad the remake is, in hopes of saving you $30. I promise you, it's not worth it. Go buy some Cookout instead.
This fun movie was one of my favorites when I was a kid. Starring Vanessa Morgan as the vampire babysitter, going back and watching this movie was a super great and nostalgic experience. While this movie definitely isn't one I would consider a "cinematic masterpiece," it was really fun to go back and watch. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend checking it out.
Better late then never, for the third week in a row, this week's movie of the week is another horror movie: Hereditary. One of my favorite modern horror movies from one of my favorite modern horror movies directors, Ari Aster, this 2018 film is hauntingly good. Truly a one of a kind movie, this movie is definitely one you need to check out. Following a family of four struggling with the loss of their grandmother, the events that unfold in this movie are insane and will have you hooked from beginning to end. If you are interested in watching this film, it is free with your Amazon Prime subscription.
Believe it or not, this week’s movie of the week is yet another horror movie. If you know me, you know horror is my favorite movie genre. I just love the unique, eerie feeling you get when you watch a horror movie. Whether its a slasher film or a physiological horror flick, there is something magical about horror movies. Despite the dark content and amount of gore that comes with these films, I believe horror movies are some of the most beautiful and meaningful movies. Anyways, back to the movie of the week. This week, I have chosen the 2015 horror flick, The Witch. Coming into this movie, I really wasn’t expecting anything special. After I saw the A24 logo at the beginning of the movie, my standards were raised. For those of you that don’t know, A24 is a rather new film company that has come out with some astounding films, including two of my personal favorites; Hereditary and Midsommar. From the title of the movie and Netflix description, I was expecting this to be your basic “evil witch in the woods that comes out for jump scares” horror movie. However, this movie was definitely far from that. This movie was much darker and far more interesting than what I had expecting. Taking place in the early 1600’s, this movie follows the story of a Puritan family living on their own in the new world and facing unimaginable, paranormal, and evil challenges. Not only did this movie have great cinematic and horror elements, but it also had very interesting religious elements. As I have said in other movie reviews, I am a Christian and appreciate when I can find theological elements in movies. Given that the main characters in the movie were all Puritans, it’s no surprise that Christianity was a main theme throughout the film. Instead of going into detail about these things, since some of them are major plot spoilers, I am planning on starting another section of my website focusing on Christianity in movies, so stay tuned for that. To conclude this review, The Witch is a fascinating, dark film that is perfect for the upcoming Halloween season. If you would like to check it out, it is available on Netflix.
In this 2018 continuation of the cult classic Halloween franchise, we follow an older (and pretty bad-ass) Laurie Strode and her family on the 40th anniversary of the tragic Michael Myers incident. This modern slasher film was terrific. Utilizing sound effects and music from the original film left viewers with a similar, magical feeling that came with watching the 1978 film. Unlike other films in the franchise, this slasher film had lots of comedic relief throughout, which helped balance out the gore of the movie. I thought this was a terrific movie. If you haven't watched it yet, I definitely recommend it. Watch the originals first, though (duh.)
While I have been given grief over rating this movie lower then one of my all time favorite movies, Suicide Squad, I do have to give this movie lots of credit and praise. Over the past three nights, I have been rewatching this amazing movie. This movie has everything: an amazing director, terrific plot, a great soundtrack, many wonderful, well known actors, and fantastic acting. If, for some reason, you haven't seen this movie yet, you definitely need to watch it.
To put it very bluntly, while The Devil's Rejects is a great movie, this classic 2005 horror movie is not for everyone. I remember watching this movie back in middle school, and after watching the prequel, House of 1000 Corpses a few weeks ago, I decided to go back and re watch this flick. It was a lot better than I remembered and honestly blew my mind. While, yes, gore and violence is very prevalent throughout the movie and not suitable for everyone, the movie's plot, characters, and soundtrack were absolutely amazing. Regarding the soundtrack, the songs throughout the movie were all amazing and fit the vibe of the movie very well. I thought this movie was very enjoyable and much better than the first movie. The movie allowed you to get to know the characters more, and despite obviously being a horror movie, at some points, it had kind of a fun vibe to it. In conclusion, even though the movie isn't for everyone, if you are into horror movies with plenty of gore, I definitely recommend checking out this movie. If you are a Prime member, this movie is included in your subscription.
This 2017 coming of age thriller was, as implied by the title, super dark. Following the story of two high school boys and an accident involving one of their friends, the movie shows the stress, anxiety, and violence that occurred because of the actions that were taken. I thought this movie was great. It had an awesome story and phenomenal acting. I was very impressed by this movie until I found out about a theory involving one of the movies (not-so) secondary characters, then I was even more impressed. If you decide to watch this amazing movie, I highly recommend that you check out the Allison Theory after. It will blow your mind, then make you want to watch the movie again. In conclusion, this was an insanely good movie that I highly recommend.
This classic 1995 action comedy movie is pretty great to say the least. Starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as two Miami cops, Bad Boys is a very fun, enjoyable movie with lots of shooting, laughing, and explosions. I watched Bad Boys For Life before watching this one, and I have to say this movie is way better. With much better characters and story line, if you liked Bad Boys For Life, you should find this movie even more funny, enjoyable, and interesting.
Coming into this movie, I didn't know much other than it won a ton of awards. I've heard a lot of people talk about it, so I thought I would check it out. I really wasn't expecting to like it that much, but this movie BLEW ME AWAY. It was so fun, interesting, and sad; it was very weird mix of emotions to experience throughout the movie. The movie's plot had lots of interesting twists and turns, and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. This thought provoking, Academy Award winning movie is one I would definitely recommend. However, keep in mind that this movie is not in English, so if you are going to watch it, you really need to pay attention and read the subtitles.
After a three week long hiatus, Stine's Movie of the Week is back. This week, I have chosen the amazing horror film, The Conjuring. This movie is not only amazing because it delivers exceptional horror and an amazing plot, but it also provided a gateway to other amazing modern horror movies of the 2010's. Kicking off the entire Conjuring franchise, this movie introduces you to demonlogists Ed and Lorraine Warren and takes you through the story of a family whose lives are impacted by a demonic possession at their new house. This is a amazing, classic, modern horror film is a great pick and something you should definitely need to watch.
This Netflix film is interesting to say the least. The movie stars a few well known actors, such as Allison Brie playing the oddball main character and Debby Ryan playing a supporting character. This film is interesting, weird, and somewhat unsettling. Even though the title sounds like you would be watching a movie centered around a girl riding horses, I promise you it is not going to be what you're expecting. Without spoiling major plot details, prepare yourself for some supernatural/paranormal/psychological stuff. Also, don't watch this with your children.
This sequel to the classic movie, Back to the Future, is just what you would expect: very fun & enjoyable. Without spoiling any major plot details, Doc & Marty go to the future, then go back, then they go to the past, and finally, they go back to the future. Incorporating elements from the first film into the second film when they travel to the past from the present, this movie was super fun and did a very good job of tying the first movie into the second movie. I highly recommend this fun movie AND it's predecessor if you have not seen it yet.
This 2017 biopic starring one of my favorites, Margot Robbie, tells the story of the Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding. I really didn't know much about the Tonya Harding story before watching the movie, and I will admit, I did just watch it because Margot Robbie was in it. Regardless, I really enjoyed this movie. Taking you through the stages of Harding's life leading up to and following "the incident," this black comedy drama is a very fun and interesting movie accompanied by a great soundtrack.
This weeks movie of the week was chosen by my friend, Taylor! This fantastic murder mystery flick is a fun movie that everyone can enjoy! Click the link below to read my entire movie review!
This sequel to 2014's The Lego Movie is a great movie to watch with your family! Personally, I thought this movie was hilarious! It's so goofy, fun, and enjoyable. Taking place five years after the events in The Lego Movie, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part is an ~awesome~ adventure that I highly recommend! If you have Hulu , this movie is included with your subscription for a limited time.
This British Independent Film staring Florence Pugh is very interesting to say the least. While it has absolutely nothing to do with the famous Shakespearean play Macbeth, this film is just as dramatic. Taking place in 1800's England, the movie follows the story of Katherine; a newlywed woman who, like many of us, is stuck at home and bored. While this movie is very good, I will admit, it isn't for everyone. Given the nudity and sexual content in some scenes, it is definitely not for children. Even if indie films aren't your thing, I think you should check it out! If you have Hulu or Amazon Prime, this movie is included with your subscription.
