The Mathematics department at Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering at LUMS has gained prominence for high-quality teaching, research, and activities related to its mathematical research and outreach. The Department offers effective programs of value to the mathematics community as a citadel of Mathesis Universalis. At the graduate level, the department has Ph.D. Mathematics and MS Mathematics programs. For undergraduates, we offer a BS in Mathematics, a BS with a joint specialization in Economics, a Minor in Mathematics, and a Minor in Quantitative Finance. The department bears a vision similar to that of Henri Poincaré:  

To exist (in mathematics) is to be free from contradiction. But mere existence does not guarantee survival. To survive in mathematics requires a kind of vitality that cannot be described in purely logical terms.      

Over the years, the department has been hosting regular workshops and thematic research schools. In recognition of the department’s ongoing endeavors, the European Mathematical Society (EMS) has awarded it the Emerging Regional Centre of Excellence (ERCE) status. Another honor received by the department is its selection as an ICTP Affiliated Centre by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP). As an ICTP Affiliated Centre, the department hosts the prestigious International Mathematics Master (IMM) program. This two-year program recruits top talent offers substantial coursework, research, and incorporates the involvement of the international math community through visiting professorships and joint research supervision. Moreover, the department regularly organizes in-house and outreach activities like LUMS Math Circles to popularize mathematics among school kids.
