Building Establishment
The Church of Christ in Washington was established in 1958 and Norman Jones got the Washington Church of Christ congregation started. Before the church was established the building was a one-room school that was built onto.
History of the Church of Christ
The Church of Christ dates to the days of the New Testament. (Romans 16:16 “Greet one another with a holy kiss. Salute one another with an holy kiss. The churches of Christ salute you.”) The Churches of Christ were founded on the Day of Pentecost, A.D. 33. (Acts 2:1-4 “When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”) The Church of Christ was first established in America in the late 1700’s, up in the New England states.
The Church of Christ is known for its emphasis on returning to New Testament Christianity, and for its desire to unite all Christians into one body. (1 Corintians:12-14 “For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many.”)
Church Beliefs
We believe that the New Testament is the only rule for faith and practice in religious matters and that it must authorize all that is done in Christian worship, therefore we strictly follow the New Testament. We believe that the Bible teaches that sinners are saved by faith, confession, repentance, and baptism. Along with the fact that a Christian needs to remain faithful to the Lord after conversion.
The Church of Christ is organized with elders, deacons, preachers, and members as was in the New Testament times. We believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that the Bible is inspired by God, and that Jesus will return to take HIS kingdom (Church) home to God. We place emphasis on sincere worship, every-member evangelism, godly living, love for one another, and helping those that are in need.
We believe that religious unity is possible, even in a day with so many divisions, and we feel this can be done by simply following the New Testament pattern and putting aside human traditions.
Simply put, the Church of Christ in Washington strives to be the same church as one would read about in the New Testament. We strive to follow Bible doctrine, follow a Biblical lifestyle, and practice Bible teachings.
