About Me

Hello, I'm Chrys!

I'm currently a rising junior (11th grade) at The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut. My passions are playing soccer, watching hockey, theatre, and reading.

At Hotchkiss, I am a captain on boys varsity soccer. I also play varsity ultimate frisbee and take photos for the sports teams in the winter. I'm an International Student Mentor, and a Round Square Conference delegate. I am also a proud board member of Swiftie Club, Hotchkiss' #1 Taylor Swift fan club!

Over the summer, I will be going to Columbia University's pre-college program, where I'll be learning more about psychology and sociology. I also plan to do a lot of math and Spanish, as I plan to skip a level!

My Experience in Service and Coaching

9th grade at Chinese International School for me was a transformative one. I spent a year abroad in Hangzhou, China, where my entire grade and I immersed ourselves in Chinese culture. As part of this year abroad program, I was introduced to community service. I was appointed as the leader of The China Grassroots Football program, a community service group that went to an underprivileged school once a week.

It was here that I gained valuable first-hand experience in coaching, service, and leadership. My group consisted mostly of my teammates on the soccer team, as we all shared the same passion for soccer. At first, we went to an autism school to teach children with autism how to play soccer. As a group, we found difficulty sharing our love for the game with them, since their attention spans were limited. Though we tried to continue working with the autism school, it didn't work out in the end. We switched to an underprivileged school in suburban Hangzhou for the second semester, and things started working out. We were able to communicate with the students clearly and we felt like we were genuinely forming connections and sharing our passion with them.

That is why for this community service project, I am targeting children of the same age group, 8-12, as this is what I'm most experienced with.

My Philosphy

My goal is not to create the best soccer player who can control the ball, dribble past defenders, and score goals. My goal is to share my love for the sport with the children. Teaching children different skill moves and precise techniques is important, but ensuring that children have genuine joy when they step on the field is even more important. Passionate soccer players are the ones who are willing to improve on their own.

As a kid, I never had an older figure who showed me how to play soccer. All I had was a ball and a wall to work with, yet every day I'd go down and just kick the ball in every way possible until I couldn't anymore. I genuinely loved the sport, and I was willing to get better on my own.

I want to give these underprivileged kids what I didn't have: inspiration. I want to kickstart a passion for soccer in these children, something that can stay with them for the rest of their lives.
