Source: The Judges of the Dead
In order to make the wisest and most well informed decisions in this process, you will need to understand some places in the Underworld.
There are three locations available for the afterlife: Tartarus, Asphodel Meadows, and Elysium.
Souls who deserve eternal punishment for their worldly actions should be sent to Tartarus. My father and the other Titans are there... it is not the number one choice for many of the souls that arrive here.
Ordinary souls, those who didn't commit significant crimes or wrong doings, but also didn't achieve greatness, should be sent to Asphodel Meadows. They will spend their afterlife performing labors of varying degrees.
Remarkable souls who have lived righteous and virtuous lives should be sent to Elysium. They can be heroes, those close to the Gods, or normal people. These souls will live an easy life and have no tasks to complete. (P.S. you should strive to end up here...)
Judge these souls by their actions and their inner most desires and thoughts. Weigh every matter and render the best decision. We're counting on you...
Author's Note: This story touches on the different Greek myths about the Judges of the Underworld, Sisyphus, Achilles, and Ixion. You can read further about each of these stories through my sources in the bibliography, but here is a short background on each one.
The Judges of the Underworld are addressed in my background on the home page.
Sisyphus is a pretty popular myth... he's the guy that has to push a big rock up a tall hill for eternity. Basically, he was a pretty rude king who wanted to maintain strict control. He killed travelers and guests and took joy in it. He also killed his brother simply because they did not like each other. There are also lots of different stories on how he cheats death with his wit and this goes to boost his huge ego. He eventually gets stuck in the Underworld and is sentenced to Tartarus and yes, is forced to push that huge boulder.
Achilles is a popular hero due to his involvement in the Trojan War. While most stories paint him as dedicated, courageous, and loyal, he also was a bit of a pouter. When things didn't go his way, he responded like a child. There are instances where he refused to fight in battle when he was needed, and he had a pretty atrocious revenge killing of Hector. He did many great things as well, the most notable being he never lost in battle. He spends his afterlife in Elysium, but he may or may not be satisfied with that...
Finally, Ixion and the Wheel. Ixion had a rough start as some guys killed his mother in front of him... but, nevertheless, he got revenge and killed them both. Later in life, he married Dia and refused to pay her father Deioneus. Deioneus stole Ixion's horses as a response which lead to his death by Ixion. His worst act was falling in love with Hera, which Zeus punished him for by tricking him to fall in love, and have a kid with, a cloud version of Hera (their kid was the first Centaur also known as Ixionidae). Ixion is stuck to a spinning fiery wheel for eternity and was eventually sentenced to Tartarus.
I thought this would be a fun choose-your-own-adventure style story, so I hope y'all enjoy. This game, more than my others, can actually be played many different ways and it also renders a couple different endings. I had a lot more planned for this story, but ended up being limited by word count. Enjoy this fun adventure as a Judge of the Dead and a little exploration into some popular Greek myths!
