PROJECT DESCRIPTION...
For this project, we had to research an emerging technology of our choosing. We had to get some details about it and create a PowerPoint to present to the class. I chose TISSUE ENGINEERING METHODS.
IMPORTANCE...
Tissue engineering methods, or regenerative medicine, is important because the goal is to be able to restore, preserve, and/or enhance the integrity of defective tissues and/or organs to avoid replacement.
WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH IT?
Artificial cells, made with synthetic materials have been produced. Those cells have the ability to form into, and mimic bone.
Scientists have been able to create tissue engineered cartilage grafts. Recipients of the grafts could potentially avoid major joint surgeries.
WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH ME?
Well...if you ever need to receive this treatment...
You will be able to avoid surgeries and the extensive healing time that comes with it
You will be able to function normally, quicker
You won't have to worry about a foreign substance (metals) in your body
WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT IT?
More organic
No prosthetic parts
WHAT’S THE BAD PART?
Longer wait time for the procedure
Has a possibility of going back to the pre surgery condition if the root cause isn't fixed
LESSONS LEARNED...
I learned that after formal training, PowerPoint isn’t that bad! As far as my researched topic goes, scientists and doctors are really making progress with tissue engineering, and it is actually being used to help REAL people.
