Founding Editors Oliver Marks and Xiya Shively
Chromatic is an open nexus for young artists across the nation. As a student-run magazine, we aim to uncover and celebrate bold and creative visual expression and find art in the unexpected. We believe in the power of the open page to help artists find their voice, reach an audience, and share their message.
Xiya Shively graduated from the Polytechnic School in Pasadena and is now at the University of Michigan, studying art and political science. She is a passionate visual artist primarily focused on bold, expressive depictions of the female figure. Working primarily in acrylic, her paintings explore themes of vulnerability, power, and liberation through distortion, movement, and color. Inspired by feminist theory and expressionism, Xiya uses her art to spark dialogue and understand the human experience.
Oliver Marks graduated from Polytechnic School in Pasadena and is now attending Stanford as a dual major in art and psychology. He is a photographer drawn to capturing movement, emotion, and atmosphere. His work spans street, sports, and editorial photography, unified by a focus on how images connect with the viewer. From crisp, high-impact moments to more moody, interpretive scenes, Oliver’s photography reflects an ongoing curiosity about people, place, and perception.
