To this day I consider my high school piano teacher one of the most influential teachers in my life. Simply put, he taught me to love music. He combined knowledge and skill with passion and he taught me what music really is: art. I believe that these three qualities - knowledge, skill, and passion – are the foundation of good piano teaching. From the very beginning of musical study, my goal is to introduce students to the joy of music by setting this example.
I believe that everyone can learn and enjoy music, regardless of background or talent. This does not mean that each student is the same, but rather that anyone can interact with music in a meaningful way. I am committed primarily to my students. I believe that their goals, needs, and progress are of the first importance. For this reason, a personalized plan of study will be created in consultation with every student and their parents. Lessons for those who desire advanced training will be structured differently from those who have a recreational interest in taking lessons, however, my dedication as a teacher to help each student towards their goals is the same.
To this end, I work to foster a positive relationship of trust with each of my students. This trust is based on mutual respect. I strive to be patient and encouraging, while remaining honest about my students’ progress. I value excellence and I am dedicated to helping each student to achieve their own personal best.
I believe that a musical education, as with any other type of education, needs to be well-rounded. My teaching is comprised of a mixture of activities designed to give students a balanced set of skills. This includes a variety of repertoire selections, technical exercises, ear training, sight reading, theory, improvisation, and other creative activities. In addition, students are encouraged to listen to diverse musical styles and to attend live concerts.
I believe that private teaching requires an equal amount of professionalism as any other teaching occupation. As a professional, I am committed to creating a structured environment in the running of my studio as well as in each lesson that I teach. I value organization and communication as a means for students, parents, and myself to maintain a mutual understanding of our expectations and plans. As a musician, I am dedicated to developing my own performing and pedagogical skills through continued training and professional resources.
