I remember when we were children, my Mom would take my brothers and I out the whole day to enjoy the Christmas window displays across Paris. We would start the day on Boulevard Haussmann at le Printemps and the Galeries Lafayette (you have to go inside and see the Christmas tree under the dome: it is breathtaking). At the time, the window displays were really enchanting and aimed at children. These days, it is less interesting: usually brands now decorate the windows with their products. Of course, there is a Christmas theme (sometimes very subtle), but it is not the same anymore. When we were young we would see many other kids like us and even entire schools were coming to see the displays!

My Mom, brothers and I would then head to the Place de la Madeleine where Fauchon used to recreate a huge and beautiful chalet on their front facade. It sadly does not exist anymore. We would then walk to Place Vendme and end our adventure on the Champs-lyses.

You can still have a nice experience following the same path and why not have a nice hot chocolate or coffee at Ladure on Place de la Madeleine or the Champs-Elyses. Another nice tearoom is Angelina on Rue de Rivoli and close to Place de la Madeleine. I really love its location as you can take a nice walk in the Tuileries gardens afterwards.

This is my favorite department store in Paris. And every year I look forward to visiting their Christmas shop on the second floor. They sell beautiful trees and ornaments and you can get inspiration from several themed trees. I enjoy going there on Saturday morning (when I am not in the countryside) as the store is still not very crowded and then stop by La Grande picerie to buy a few Christmas cookie cutters and Panettone. This definitely sets me in the mood for Christmas!

The much-celebrated Main Concourse of this iconic New York train station is a sight to behold all year long, with its 60-foot high arched windows and vaulted teal ceiling adorned with reproductions of constellations.

Plus, step into their Grand Lobby to see the hotel in gingerbread form. This annual Palace tradition is brought to life by their Executive Chef and pastry team over the course of 300 hours using 110 pounds of gingerbread dough and icing.

For many years, the lions wore wreaths around their necks during the holiday season, but in 2004 it was discovered that the tradition was actually damaging the sculptures. For almost a decade the lions went wreath-less, until in 2013 the library enlisted Chelsea-based American Foliage & Design Group to create artificial Norwood Green Spruce wreaths. Several precautions were taken to avoid any further damage, including building the wreaths with no metal, which can corrode the marble, and using Marine-grade plywood to prevent water damage.

We wanted to keep the day as on-theme with the season as possible, so we looked for a lunch restaurant and bar for drinks that would be decorated and festive. We had lunch at La Grande Boucherie and an afternoon drink at Valerie and they were both cozy and lovely. La Grande Boucherie is a 10-minute walk northwest of Rockefeller Center, and Valerie is a 5-minute walk north of Bryant Park.

To do a full loop starting and ending at Grand Central Terminal, this route clocks in at just under three miles with an estimated walking time of one hour and five minutes. Of course, I recommend taking your time and enjoying each stop thoroughly! This is a flat route and wheel-accessible due to being fully on sidewalks.

A Christmas window is a special window display prepared for the Christmas shopping season at department stores and other retailers. Some retailers around the world have become noted for their Christmas window displays, with some becoming tourist attractions. Christmas windows are sometimes thematic and may include animatronics.

Several retailers in New York City attract shoppers and tourists to their Christmas window displays, including Macy's and Lord & Taylor.[1] Macy's established the practice at its New York City store when it debuted an animated shop window in 1883.[2] .mw-parser-output .templatequote{overflow:hidden;margin:1em 0;padding:0 32px}.mw-parser-output .templatequote .templatequotecite{line-height:1.5em;text-align:left;padding-left:1.6em;margin-top:0}

At Christmastime, it is often Spaeth Design that is behind the windows and store displays of many of the nation's major retailers, as well as the lobby displays of some of New York's major hotels and office buildings: the Palace, the Harley, the St. Moritz and the Park Lane hotels, and the Park Avenue Plaza and Gulf and Western office buildings.

AM&A's flagship department store in Buffalo, New York was known locally for its Victorian Christmas windows. Auction internet company Chartitybuzz auctioned the experience of watching Simon Doonan create the Barney's Christmas windows to benefit Christie's Green Auction in 2010 with a final bid received for $60,000.[4] Kaufmann's offered Christmas windows and Santa Land.

Until it closed in 1989, Altman's was known for its Christmas window displays that rivaled Lord & Taylor's, a few blocks up on Fifth Avenue. In Pittsburgh, Horne's was one of the retailers known for its Christmas window displays. In Boston, Filene's would hold a Christmas tree lighting and Jordan Marsh would present a series festive Christmas window displays known as the "Enchanted Village". The window display has since relocated to Boston's Hynes Convention Center, and then to City Hall Plaza.

In Montreal, James Aird Nesbitt was in charge of the traditional Christmas window displays at the Ogilvy department store. In 1947, he commissioned German toymaker Steiff to create two animated holiday scenes known as "The Mill in the Forest" and "The Enchanted Village". The displays included dozens of handcrafted mechanical toy animals and more than a hundred moveable parts. In 2008, the displays were refurbished.[6] Woodward's Department Store in Vancouver's retail shopping district was also known for its Christmas window displays.[citation needed]

The Fenwick (department store) in Newcastle is known locally for its Christmas window display. Since 1971 there has been a Christmas display in the shop's windows, and people come from near and far to look at them.[citation needed] There are records going back to the 1930s to indicate that displays have been done. The 2009 theme was a traditional nativity scene, differing from the 2002 aliens theme ("Christmas in Another World") which showed aliens celebrating Christmas and sparked discussion in the letters page of the local papers.[citation needed] The Arab dress provoked some debate. The commentators may not have been familiar with the location of Bethlehem.[original research?] In 2011, the store held the 40th anniversary of the store's Christmas window display tradition.[7] The store is best known for its extravagant windows, filled with detailed sets and sophisticated moving figures, which appears every Christmas and almost rivals the windows in Liberty's.[original research?] The themes are taken mainly from fairy tales and children's stories. The figures move and are accompanied by music.[citation needed]

In 2011, Anthony Ausgang designed the Christmas windows for the La Rinascente Department Store in Milan with larger-than-life three-dimensional models of his trademark psychedelic cartoon cats.[8] Bertrand Planes designed Christmas window displays for Le Bon March in Paris.[9]

In Australia, the Sydney department store David Jones presents an annual animated Christmas Window display.[10] Traditionally these have often featured snowy northern hemisphere Christmas scenarios, but in 2014 the windows are set in a distinctly Australian summer, featuring beach and rainforest scenes,[11] based on the book "Reindeer's Christmas Surprise" by Australian author Ursula Dubosarsky and illustrator Sue De Gennaro.[12]

In Melbourne, the Myer department store began presenting an annual Christmas window display in 1956,[13] and later added the annual Myer Christmas Parade. Displays have typically included scenes from Christmas related stories such as "The 12 Days of Christmas", A Christmas Carol and How the Grinch Stole Christmas! as well as nativity scenes and scenes from children's stories and fairy tales. For the past few decades, displays have featured animated characters. Uno's Garden was chosen as the theme of the 2007 Myer Christmas Windows in Melbourne and Brisbane, Australia.

The stores - Galeries Lafayette, Printemps Haussmann, Bon March, BHV Marais, and  La Samaritaine - typically reveal their spectacular windows starting in early November, just as the first holiday lights and other decorations begin to light up the city with seasonal cheer.

Galeries Lafayette's flagship store on Boulevard Haussmann, one of Paris's historic Grands Boulevards, boasts a large number of huge windows overlooking the famous street as well as around the corner on Rue de la Chausse d'Antin.

Each year features a different theme.  Look closely, and you will see fantasy versions of everyday creatures such as bees, flowers, childhood favorites such as candy canes and teddy bears, a favorite children's book such as "The Little Prince," or fairground theme such as "The Greatest Showman."

Luxury goods such as designer bags and gorgeous jewelry provide an extra layer of interest in some windows, while others focus almost solely on irresistible fashion favorites or kids toys - all offered for sale inside.

For a more personalized experience, join this "Paris at Christmas" tour to see the famous window displays and Galeries Lafayette's famous Christmas tree and glass dome, plus holiday decorations in 19th century covered passages and French holiday food specialties. 152ee80cbc
