Dr. Christina Krause

I am a mathematics educator and current assistant professor of mathematics education at the Karl-Franzens-University Graz in Austria. Prior to this, I was a postdoctoral Marie Skłodowska  Curie fellow at the Graduate School of Education at UC Berkeley. 

My interests lie in aspects of embodiment, multimodality, and language in the teaching and learning of mathematics, encompassing individual and social factors of learning and drawing on a diversity of theoretical perspectives and methodologies. In the context of my fellowship, I spent two years at Dor Abrahamson's Embodied Design Research Laboratory, where we designed a digital learning environment within the framework of embodied design for learning (established by Prof. Dr. Dor Abrahamson at UC Berkeley). In this design, we build specifically on the strengths, modal preferences, and practices of Deaf and hard-of-hearing students—specifically their use of sign language—for learning mathematics. I originally started out as a mathematician and earned my German diploma in mathematics with minor in physics in 2009 at the University of Oldenburg. In 2010, I started my PhD project on the role of gestures in social processes of constructing mathematical knowledge, which I concluded in 2015 at the University of Bremen with 'summa cum laude' under the supervision of Angelika Bikner-Ahsbahs (U of Bremen) and  Ferdinando Arzarello (U of Turin). I was then a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Duisburg-Essen until 2019, interrupted by a visiting professorship at the University of Siegen in 2016 and maternity leave in 2017/2018, when my wonderful little guy was born.

In my free time I love spending time with friends and family, going on rollercoasters (even better - combining both), climbing, practicing Taekwondo and playing the ukulele.
