Dr. Christian Mohr (PI, U Potsdam)

Christian obtained a Diploma in Geography from the University of Cologne and PhD in Ecohydrology from the University of Potsdam. He studies how forests and trees translate environmental disturbances, such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes or wind (among others) into (sub-)surface processes and record them in dendroecological archives. His goal is to predict ecohydrogeomorhic processes in forested landscapes and quantify the role of disturbances in that context.

MSc Sten Gilfert (U Potsdam)

Sten recently joined the RETROGRESS team as a PhD student. He holds a BSc in Geography from Mainz University before he obtained a MSc in Geoecology at Potsdam University. Sten will investigate the influence of wind and biomass loads on landsliding and its effect on regional soil organic carbon cycling within the biomass-rich Coastal Rainforests of Patagonia. To this end, Sten will apply environmental seismology and conduct field work to develop and feed numerical Landlab models.

BSc Frieder Tautz (U Potsdam)

Frieder obtained a BSc in Geoecology at Potsdam University and is enrolled in the MSc program CLEWS. He contributes to the project with his modeling skills and takes care of the data base.

Dr. Michael Dietze (GFZ, U Goettingen)

Micha holds a Diploma and PhD in Geography from the Technical University of Dresden. He moved to GFZ in 2013 where he strarted to develop environmental seismology applications for monitoring Earth surface processes. He currently moved to the University of Göttingen.

Prof. Dr. Violeta Tolorza (UFRO, Temuco)

Violeta holds a diploma and PhD in Geology from the Universidad de Chile. She has developed her research and teaching at Universidad Austral de Chile (2015-2019) and at Universidad de La Frontera since 2020. Violeta investigates erosion and denudation using cosmogenic nuclides and suspended sediments in rivers, particularly in disturbed forest landscapes.

Prof. Brian Buma, PhD (CU Denver, EDF)

Brian Buma is an ecosystem and change ecologist interested in carbon dynamics at broad scales. His work focuses on disturbances, changing climates, and both short and long-term biogeography. Buma's studies range from Alaska to southern Chile, and he is equally enthusiastic about storytelling, unique ecological finds, and sharing science with the general public.

Prof. Erkan Istanbulluoglu, PhD (UW Seattle)

Prof Istanbulluoglu is interested in studying the interactions of hydrologic, ecologic and geomorphic processes at the watershed scale across decadal to geomorphic time scales. He seeks to understand the impacts of climate change and human interventions on complex watershed response.

Prof. Dr. Andres Iroume (UACh, Valdivia)

Andrés Iroumé is a Professor at the Faculty of Forest Sciences and Natural Resources, Universidad Austral de Chile. He has a Diploma in Civil Engineering (Universidad de Chile) and a PhD in Forest Sciences at the University of Göttingen. His research is focused on the study of hydrological processes in experimental catchments and fluvial morphology in rivers affected by natural disturbances. Andrés currently leads a project in forested experimental catchments funded by a Chilean private forest company. Also, he is studying the morphologic adjustments after volcanic eruptions in three fluvial corridors in southern Chile.

BSc Erwin Gonzalez (CONAF)

Erwin is Agricultural Engineer and also holds a Diploma in Adventure Tourism Management. In 2008 he started working with Kris and Douglas Tompkins in the Park Pumalin. Since 2015 he has been the Park Administrator of this private project. After the donation of the Park to the Chilean Government, Erwin became Administrator of Pumalin Douglas Tompkins National Park, working daily in the conservation of ecosystems and protection of their resources and legacy.

BSc Benjamin Sotomayor

Benjamín Sotomayor is a Natural Renewable Resources Engineer from University of Chile and has specialized in spatial analysis and geomatics using GIS, satellite remote sensing and UAV-based aerial photogrammetry. He currently lives in Patagonia where he works as a private land surveyor and develops a 3D Climbing Guides project called Topos3D.
