So, you are looking at getting a boa as a pet or already have one, and you are in need of some up to date information on their care? This is a high detail care guide that I, Riley, wrote from my years of keeping, researching, and studying the lives and heath of my boas. I believe that there are a quiet a few things that must be met to accomplish proper boa care and husbandry.
Boas can reach quite large sizes as adults but when they are a baby they are a very manageable size. Baby boas can do fine in a 10-20 gallon glass tank but I personally prefer that they are setup in either modified plastic tubs, or better yet, small PVC enclosures. The T1 from Animal Plastics is a wonderful option if you are looking for a first PVC enclosure for a baby boa six months of age or more. Though this will last your baby some time, it is important to think about future cages in advance. I would suggest no small then a T8 from Animal Plastics for an adult boa. Of course, if you can go bigger, the boa will not complain, though keep in mind that boa like all snakes tend to be nervous in large open spaces. To combat any additional stress on your boa due to them feeling exposed, I recommend slowly increasing the size of the enclosure as the boa grows and upgrading when needed. By no means am I saying that boas should remain in enclosures that are too small for them, this is not for the animal's benefit.
You can use many types of substrate for boas but truly it comes to personal preference. The one that looks the best, to me at least and helps hold humidity very efficiently is ReptiChip. I personally use this bedding for all my boas and have never had an issue with it. Aspen is used by some but just watch that it doesn’t get too wet, as it can easily develop mold. Spot cleaning the substrate whenever they defecate. You should clean the whole thing out about once a month or so depending on the size of the messes and how often they occurred. Newspaper cam also be used, though it doesn’t truly look nice and you have to change it all whenever them use it.
