What is UFLI?

UFLI Foundations, an explicit and systematic program that teaches students the foundational skills necessary for proficient reading. It follows a carefully developed scope and sequence designed to ensure that students systematically acquire each skill needed and learn to apply each skill with automaticity and confidence. The program is designed to be used for core instruction in the primary grades or for intervention with struggling students in any grade.

Weekly Progress Monitoring:

The goal of the UFLI program is to recognize our sound pattern and be able to decode & encode any word within that concept. This is a change from the traditional memorization of a small list of words and a movement towards truly understanding the sound and applying with automaticity.

The weekly  spelling test will consist of 10 words with our phonics concept that we learned during the week and 2 dictation sentences, which will also include "heart words" learned in class.

How Can I Help My Child Prepare?

You can help your child at home by practicing word chains and simple decodable words that follow the concept of the week.  Have your child tap the sounds in each word that you give them and write the words down. You can also give your child the sounds and have them say/write the letters, then blend them together to make the word.

(Digital Word Work Mats are in the Resource Link below)

I will also send home weekly Roll & Reads and UFLI Home Practice pages.  Some weeks the UFLI skill doesn't align with our Wonders reading curriculum and focuses on additional important skills.  On those weeks when they differ, please use the Roll & Read to practice our weekly sound.
