One of my AR projects deals with mental health among famous jazz and blues musicians and how that led to the genius in their music but at what cost to the musicians and the art form? I call the project "Jazz as Data: Mental Health and Jazz" with four examples below and how artists such as John Coltrane, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Nina Simone all had mental health challenges that greatly influenced their art and music.
Billie Holiday, for example, suffered from major depression after recording "Strange Fruit" and seeing the aftermath of a lynching in the segregated South and tried in court by the US Government and barred from singing it to Miles Davis dealing with psychotic episodes following the recording of "Kind of Blue" and his bloody assault by police in NYC in the late 1950's and no jazz musicians were safe from mental illness back then when their music changed the world and with segregation, these musicians had to enter the back door to perform at the famous clubs in the country of which most clubs barred blacks so that played a role in the indignities for these musicians and it affected their mental health in the worse way.
