Welcome to ENGL 1003 - ESL Level 3. This course is designed for the non-native speaker of English who possesses a mid-intermediate to advanced level of competency in spoken and written English. This course includes practice in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

This course counts as an elective and as an English support class. We will practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. You can expect to practice your various skills, as well as review important grammatical concepts and common cultural references, through class readings, discussions, presentations, and other activities.

Welcome to ESL 3! I am excited for us to get started in this course!

This module will go over the items you need to be successful this semester. It will introduce you to the online platform we will use for this class, PAWS, as well as the various applications that we will be using. You will become familiar with the class policies, including how to communicate with me. You will also become familiar with the discussion forum.

For this module, you will:

  • Learn how to use and/or setup course applications.

    • PAWS

    • Navigate

    • Grammarly

    • Microsoft Outlook

    • Microsoft Teams

    • Smarthinking

  • Post an introductory discussion board assignment related to language learning experiences and strategies.

  • Read the syllabus

Objectives:

  • Students will display an understanding of course expectations, policies, and familiarity with class PAWS site.

  • Students will demonstrate understanding of course communication protocols

  • Students will compose an introduction to your classmates in English

In this module, you will be learning about the community in which you live and the library services available to you at Southwest while also learning about sentences and paragraphs in college writing.

Assessment activities will include the following:

  • Writing & Grammar Exercises

  • Reading and Discussion Posts on Community services.

  • Southwest library online orientation

  • Southwest library scavenger hunt

  • Online tutoring session library’s Academic Support Center

You will also apply for a library card for your community library if you do not already have one.

Objectives:

  • Learn about community services & volunteer activities in Memphis

  • Become acquainted with the Southwest Library and its services

  • Identify the components of a basic sentence.

  • Review sentence structure formation and issues, and identify ways to vary sentence structure.

  • Use correct punctuation when creating a variety of sentence structures.

  • Combine sentences and ideas using coordination and subordination.

  • Identify ways to identify and create parallelism in writing.

  • Identify characteristics of a good topic sentence and three parts of a developed paragraph.

  • Apply purpose, audience, tone, and content to a specific assignment.

In this module, you will be learning about News & Current Events while also learning about essay writing and word usage in college writing. You will:

  • Watch course lectures and read companion Power Points for the module topics.

  • Access the NPR website or app, choose news topics from NPR to present to class in written or spoken form on the class discussion board, and host discussions on their topics.

  • Complete Writing & Grammar assignments and take quizzes on essay writing and word usage

In this module, we will cover the following topics:

  • Sources for News and Current events

  • Writing & Grammar Topics: Writing Essays; Revising & Editing; and Word Usage, Form, & Context

Objectives:

  • Distinguish between different sources for news and current events

  • Present a summary of a news item of interest

  • Use prewriting strategies to choose a topic and narrow the focus.

  • Identify the steps in constructing an outline, and construct topic and sentence outlines.

  • Learn to engage the reader immediately with the introductory paragraph.

  • Identify major areas of concern in the draft essay during revising and editing.

  • Identify and use strategies to avoid commonly confused words.

  • Identify common spelling rules, commonly misspelled words and commonly misused homonyms.

  • Identify how to avoid using slang, cliches, and overly general words in your writing.

  • Recognize how synonyms and antonyms to improve writing.

In this module, you will be learning about educational planning and job searches while also learning about word usage and grammar issues in college writing. You will:

  • Complete Writing & Grammar assignments and take quizzes on word usage and grammar issues

  • Look up degree requirements, transfer requirements, etc. for your major, plan your next semester course schedule, and register for the Spring 2020 semester.

  • Learn about job searches in the US; conduct a search for jobs in your field; and write or record a summary of your findings to present on the class discussion board.

  • Create a cover letter and resume for your ideal job.

In this module, we will cover the following topics:

  • Writing & Grammar Topics: Words Usage, Form, & Context; English Grammar in College Writing

Objectives:

  • Identify and use adjectives and adverbs correctly.

  • Identify the meanings of common prefixes and suffixes.

  • Identify and practice context clues while reading.

  • Identify the basic structures of sentences.

  • Determine ways to turn sentences into questions.

  • Define adjectives and how they are used.

  • Identify modifiers and learn how to correct misplaced and dangling modifiers.

  • Identify and write negative statements.

  • Define and use count and noncount nouns.

  • Recognize subject and object pronouns, Identify pronouns and their antecedents, and determine common pronoun errors.

  • Use the correct regular and irregular verb forms in basic sentences.

  • Use the correct gerund or infinitive form in sentences.

  • Identify simple verb tenses.

  • Distinguish between uses of perfect verb tenses.and progressive verb tenses.

  • Define and identify modal auxiliaries.

  • Define and identify common errors in subject-verb agreement.

  • Identify prepositions and learn how and when to use prepositions.

In this module, you will be learning about the United States government and our immigration system, as well as while also learning about grammar issues and punctuation and capitalization in college writing. You will:

  • Find information on history of immigration in US & naturalization process through US and discuss with class.

  • Learn about the US citizenship process and application questions

  • Writing & Grammar Topics: Punctuation and Capitalization

Objectives:

  • Identify and correctly use commas in sentences.

  • Identify and correctly use apostrophes in sentences.

  • Identify the uses of parentheses and properly use in sentences.

  • Learn the basic rules of capitalization and identify common capitalization errors.

  • Students will increase their ability to organize and write paragraphs, short essays, and directions coherently and correctly in English.

  • Students will develop the ability to speak fluently in English so that a wide range of ideas can be expressed without unnecessary pauses or breakdown in communication.

  • Students will improve their ability to speak English accurately, using an acceptable standard of grammar and pronunciation when communicating.

  • Students will develop a variety of listening skills, including listening for details, listening for general information, and making inferences.

  • Students will improve reading skills needed to comprehend and analyze written English, including such skills as reading for the main idea, scanning for information, and making inferences.
