About Me

I am a Reader in Astrophysics and currently hold a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship at Newcastle University, working in the Astrophysics and Observational Cosmology group. My full CV is available here.
My main research area is understanding how galaxies formed, and a particular interest in the role of growing supermassive black holes (i.e., Active Galactic Nuclei; AGN). Towards this, I have been successful in obtaining telescope time, from a suite of observational facilities covering the electromagnetic spectrum, to study both nearby and distant galaxies. I also use simulations to produce predictions of theoretical models that can be directly tested against observations.
I also work in the area of sonification: using sound to represent data to enhance scientific discovery and to make science more accessible. Towards this I lead the Audio Universe project.
My research highlights are presented on my research pages. My work has led to a series of publications written by me, my students or my collaborators.
I have a strong record with public engagement, teaching and development. This includes the creation of educational exhibitions, activities and workshops, and leading international engagement projects. I am particularly passionate about increasing access to science to under represented groups.
